Jose Mourinho sacked by Roma after dismal run of results

Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Roma following a dismal run of results.

The Italian side are languishing in ninth in Serie A and have won just one of their last six league matches.

Mourinho's men were also knocked out of the Coppa Italia by city rivals Lazio last week and Sunday night’s 3-1 defeat to AC Milan has proved the final nail in the coffin for Mourinho.

The former Tottenham and Chelsea boss took charge at the Stadio Olimpico in the summer of 2021 and went on to lead the club to back-to-back European finals, winning the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022 and then losing on penalties to Sevilla in the Europa League 12 months later.

Roma finished second in their Europa League group this season and face a knockout tie against Feyenoord next month, but have struggled domestically.

Reports in Italy claim former Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi favourite to replace Mourinho.

“We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said a statement from the club’s owners.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

“We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”
