Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United transfer plans: Seven players who could be on their way to Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho might not have delved into the Manchester United transfer kitty in January but there was work going on behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

The Special One has identified the summer transfer window as the opportunity to reinforce the Red Devils’ squad after resisting the urge to panic buy.

United allowed Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay to move on and are saving those transfer fees for their recruitment drive at the end of the season.

Mourinho has been holding regular video conference calls with the club’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward and a shortlist has been drawn up.

“We are more focused on the summer period,” Mourinho explained. “I like my players, so nothing for me [in the January window].

“If you ask me ‘do I know what I want for the next transfer window?’ Yes I know. Is it possible to get? I’ll try, always, to be realistic.

“I remember years ago when I was asking for a second goalkeeper, my technical director gave me a list of possible second goalkeepers and the first name was Gianluigi Buffon!

“But I’m always realistic, always try to give options that are gettable, but we’ll have time to speak about that in the summer.”

So who could be on that transfer shortlist being circulated in the corridors of power at Old Trafford?

Yahoo Sport has taken a look at the areas Mourinho needs to focus their efforts on and some of the names that could be mentioned in his talks with Woodward.

Yannick Carrasco

Depay left United this winter having failed to live up the billing as one of the game’s brightest prospects.

It frees up space for a wide-man and Yannick Carrasco is very much on the radar at Old Trafford.

Carrasco appears to have fallen out with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and the bad blood between the two could facilitate an exit.

Antoine Griezmann

Manchester United’s chief negotiator, Woodward, could be clocking up the air miles with a few trips to Madrid in the coming months.

Mourinho’s number one transfer target is Atletico talisman Antoine Griezmann.

The talented forward is good friends with Paul Pogba and the French midfielder is trying to persuade him to join him in the Premier League.

Griezmann’s brother is doing little to dampen speculation with his cryptic social media posts teasing the United fans on Twitter.

Radja Nainggolan

Schneiderlin’s towering presence in midfield at Southampton never transferred to the centre of the park in Manchester.

Mourinho had frozen him out of the picture and his decision to sell him to Everton highlighted the Special One’s ruthless streak.

Ander Herrera has added a touch of bite to his game this term but United are still missing a midfielder in the mould of Roy Keane.

Radja Nainggolan has the nasty streak needed to instil fear into the opposition at the heart of the engine room.

Kostas Manolas

Eric Bailly’s unfortunate injury and African Cup on Nations commitments have deprived Mourinho of his best defender for parts of this season.

Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have not developed into the players their early promise suggested and the centre of defence is still a concern for United.

Kostas Manolas, the Roma centre-half, is in demand and United would face competition from Arsenal for his signature.

Nelson Semedo

Antonio Valencia has been rewarded with a contract extension after filling in at right-back this term – but the winger is only a stop-gap solution in defence.

Benfica’s Nelson Semedo has been targeted by United as a more natural option and reports had initially suggested a deal could be struck in January.

That move has now seemingly been halted until the summer, with a £27million fee mooted, but is expected to go through before the start of pre-season.

James Rodriguez

Manchester United’s transfer policy in recent seasons has centred around marquee signings.

James Rodriguez certainly fits that profile having earned his mega-money move to Real Madrid after starring at the World Cup in 2014.

However, he has never reached the dizzying heights his Colombia performances promised since moving to Spain.

Rodriguez would add some creative flair to the side and he just so happens to share an agent, Jorge Mendes, with United manager Mourinho.

Victor Lindelof

With Manolas at the centre of a transfer tug of war, Victor Lindelof is also being tracked by Manchester United.

The Swedish defender comes with a seal of approval from Zlatan Ibrahimovic no less.

“I think Victor is doing great things, he is playing good for Benfica, he gets a lot of responsibility for the national team now, he is growing,” the striker said of his fellow countryman in November.

“Is he good enough for United? I think he’s good enough for the big clubs out there. It’s up to him what he wants. Whatever he chooses will be good for him.”
