Gutted Celtic star Jota was put on the spot about Benfica's chances of winning the Champions League - moments after suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Bayern Munich.

After taking the lead through Nicolas Kuhn, the Hoops crashed out of Europe's elite competition on aggregate after Alphonso Davies found the net in injury time at the Allianz Arena. Brendan Rodgers ' side came within touching distance of subjecting the German giants to their first home defeat in the Champions League in four years - and speaking to TNT Sports Brasil the Portuguese winger was left frustrated during his post-match debrief.

He said: “We had a well-defined strategy. We knew that Bayern would have much more possession, but on the counter-attack we always managed to create opportunities and that was the case. But then with the last play, they managed to win the game and we couldn’t take it to extra time. That regret remains, but it must be highlighted that the group played well and I’m very proud of what we did."

Pressed on where he sees Celtic's standing in Europe after an impressive display, the wide man went on: “This Celtic team is going forward with everything and we have a very well-defined philosophy.

"We came here to fight for the result. We played in an aggressive and good way so that all the fans feel attracted to our football. The result went to Bayern, but we got here thanks to our quality and effort."

The interview would then take a turn as the report informed the winger that his former side Benfica had made it through moments after the Munich miser - after a 3-3 thriller saw the Portuguese side win 4-3 over the two legs. He smiled awkwardly, before being asked if he though the Lisbon giants could win the competition.

He responded: "Champions? Benfica is my favourite club and I'm always rooting for them too. Since Celtic couldn't get through to the next round, let Benfica win it."
