Jurgen Klopp gets Liverpool injury news he's been waiting for ahead of final farewell

Liverpool have been handed a potential injury boost ahead of their final game of the season as three players were spotted back in training on Thursday.

Andy Robertson, Diogo Jota, and Thiago Alcantara reportedly all took part in team training with the rest of Jurgen Klopp’s first team squad in their latest session, with the German set to take charge of his final match in charge of the Reds when they host Wolves on Sunday.

The Scotland captain’s presence is no surprise despite missing Monday night’s 3-3 draw with Aston Villa, with Klopp confirming that he expected Robertson back in training on Tuesday.

“I saw him this morning and he told me he’s ready to train from tomorrow on,” said the Reds boss on Monday night. “That’s the situation.”

In contrast, Jota has been sidelined since picking up an injury when scoring in Liverpool’s 3-1 victory away at Fulham last month. Klopp suggested the Portuguese would miss two weeks when confirming his lay-off, but the forward will have gone four weeks between appearances if he is fit to return against Wolves.

Jota’s latest absence is his third prolonged lay-off of the campaign, with the forward suffering with wretched fortune with injury since moving to Liverpool. But despite missing 23 of the Reds’ 57 games so far this season because of injury, the Portuguese has still managed to score 15 goals from 32 appearances.

Having missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar because of injury, his return to training would be a welcome boost for both club and player, with Jota even more determined to represent Portugal in this summer’s European Championships in Germany as a result.

Meanwhile, Thiago’s return would be a welcome surprise with the Spaniard limited to just a five-minute substitute appearance so far this season because of long-term injury and his season previously expected to be over.

The 33-year-old hasn’t started for Liverpool since February 2023, but has been limited to just five substitute appearances over the past 15 months. He was initially sidelined with a hip injury, with it later decided he would undergo surgery after a brief return in April.

However, a number of further setbacks would ensure he remained absent until the Reds’ trip to Arsenal back in February 2024. Introduced as a late substitute, a further muscle injury has kept him out of action ever since, with it feared he might have played his last game for the club as a result.

Thiago’s return is further complicated by his expiring contract status, with the midfielder expected to leave the club when his current deal runs out this summer. While spotted in team training, it is debatable whether he would be risked by Liverpool given his injury-plagued year and a half, even for a farewell cameo, especially when his future is up in the air and a further setback would hinder his search for a new club.

However, the Reds will likely pay tribute to Thiago in some form on Sunday if his exit is confirmed ahead of facing Wolves, having done similar for Divock Origi, James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita in the past two years.

But with Klopp also set to step down as Liverpool manager after nine years, the returning trio will also hope to be involved in some form in what will be their last appearance for the Reds under the German.

While pictures or video footage from the club's latest training session have not yet been shared, the Liverpool boss will offer an injury update at his final pre-match press conference at 10am on Friday.
