It's been a mixed week for Liverpool FC Women, with the Reds losing 2-1 to Leicester City before bouncing back to secure their progress to the FA Cup fifth round with a thumping 5-0 victory over West Ham.

The win comes just days before Liverpool face the Hammers in the WSL, with Leanne Kiernan, Grace Fisk, Lucy Parry and Sam Kerr all getting on the scoresheet after an own-goal.

Victory is a major confidence booster for the Reds as boss Matt Beard tries to find some consistency in his side and move them up the WSL table. Here's all the latest Liverpool FC Women news:

Left-back eyed

Liverpool are eyeing a move for Chelsea's Alejandra Bernabe, according to the BBC's Emma Sanders.

The Reds are said to be lining up a loan deal for the Spain international, who operates at left-back.

The 23-year-old has spent the previous two seasons on loan at Real Sociedad, joining Chelsea in 2023 from Atletico Madrid.

Beard delighted with FA Cup win

Matt Beard was able to take a number of positives from Liverpool's win over West Ham in the FA Cup, not least the Reds' management of injuries and the minutes provided to returning players.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: It’s a good win for us. The clean sheet is really, really important. If I look at a few things tonight: Kiernan getting on the scoresheet; Sam Kerr’s first goal for the club, same as Lucy Parry; lots of positives to take from tonight. The one thing I would say is we get in front and then I think we were a little bit lucky with their [disallowed] goal – I don’t think it was offside, if I’m honest. But we were due that little bit of luck with the decisions on that front.

But I was really pleased with the control of the game, and the really pleasing thing is to be able to give players more minutes, I was able to look after the players that have got one or two little knocks as well. And on top of that I thought Julia Bartel, when she came on, was fantastic.

Turning doubters to believers

Beard was less pleased with Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Sunday, but he insists that his squad is good enough to push for a top six place.

And he wants his side to channel Jurgen Klopp and turn doubters into believers if they are to move up the table.

Speaking in his weekly column, he said: "From our perspective, I think this is the best squad that we’ve had since I’ve been back at the club, and I know that sounds a bit contradictory because of what we did last season by finishing in the top four.

"We’ve got players learning on the job as we go and with a young squad it just takes that bit of time.

"Because of how well we did last season – and it’s not been a disaster by any means this season – we know we could be in a better position and we are not naive.

"There are still plenty of points to play for in the league and we still believe that we can get into that top six with some consistency.

"It’s like Jürgen Klopp said – turning doubters into believers."

Sophie Roman Haug steps up return

One of those returning players was striker Sophie Roman Haug, who stepped up her comeback from an ankle injury suffered back in October.

The Norway international made her comeback in the 2-1 defeat to Leicester on Sunday and continued her progress against West Ham.

Asked if it provides a boost to the side, Beard said: "Yeah, definitely. If you look at not having her in the team, I think the most difficult thing for me is that, not that you can only play in one way, but when you’ve got someone that’s so good aerially and you can turn defence into attack when teams look to step on and press you, it just takes a lot of pressure off and gives us the ability to play in numerous ways."

Tickets available

Liverpool face West Ham United again this Sunday when they host the Irons in the WSL at the St Helens Stadium.

Rehanne Skinner's side sit one place below the Reds in the WSL table and Beard will want to ensure his side make it two wins on the bounce against the Londoners.

You can show your support with tickets still available at just £10 for adults and £5 concessions.

FA Cup tie to be shown live on BBC

Liverpool's fifth round FA Cup tie against Rugby Borough will be shown live on BBC iPlayer and via the red button. The match will take place at Kilsby Lane on Sunday, February 9 at 12.30pm.
