Jurrien Timber in fan cry as Arsenal aim to bounce back from Newcastle loss

Jurrien Timber believes Arsenal’s FA Cup clash with Manchester United this weekend is a “beautiful match to bounce back” after the Gunners suffered a painful defeat to Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night after goals in either half from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

The Gunners now have a mountain to climb ahead of the second leg at St. James’ Park, which is on February 5.

Arsenal have seven games before then, starting on Sunday when they host Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup, and Timber has urged them to fight back.

“It’s never easy to bounce back from a loss at home, so we need our supporters on Sunday,” he said.

“We’re going give everything and I think it’s a beautiful match to bounce back. I think we need a little bit of luck [in front of goal]. We created chances and you have to score.

“On the other hand, if you give two easy goals away it makes it hard because they’re going to drop very low, which makes it even harder but it’s a good challenge for us. We have to learn from [the defeat] and take it into the next game.”

History is not on Arsenal’s side going into the second leg against Newcastle.

Prior to this season, only once had a side in the semi-finals of the League Cup progressed to the final after losing the first leg by two or more goals, with Aston Villa doing so against Tranmere Rovers in 1993-94.

But Timber said: “It’s all to play for in that game, it’s still a semi-final, it’s still not done. But at the same time, we have a lot of games coming up, but we have to look back at this game and learn from it, definitely.

“I don’t like losing the first match, but now that this is the case, I think it’s a good thing that we have a second chance in the second leg.

“I think if you look at the game, we dominated a big part of it but we gave two easy goals away which is not what we usually do.

“So it’s a tough one to take but at the same time, it’s half-time, we need to keep our heads up.”
