Liverpool have been told to sell Darwin Nunez as the Uruguayan continues to endure an indifferent season for the Reds. The 25-year-old has only scored four goals so far this season, and has seen both Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz preferred to him down the middle by Arne Slot.

The striker remains Liverpool’s club-record signing, brought in from Benfica in a deal worth up to £85m back in 2022. But with the January transfer window now open, Nunez has been linked with a move away from Anfield and is reportedly attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has now urged the Reds to cash in on the forward, with Jamie Carragher conceding Nunez is not suited to Arne Slot’s preferred style of play.

“If you go through the Premier League, Liverpool aren’t happy with their strikers and Arsenal aren’t happy with their strikers,” Carragher said, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

“I’m not sure if Chelsea or Manchester United are happy with their strikers either.

“My point being, I don’t think this is an era of spending £80m and being guaranteed a top striker. There isn’t one that everyone goes to.

“Under Jurgen Klopp, Darwin Nunez was alright. He wasn’t great, but he was okay because of the mad football they played, with loads of pace and plenty of shots.

“However, under Arne Slot, the play is much slower, which doesn’t suit him, so he’s almost just standing there.”

Meanwhile, Wright added: “With Liverpool and Darwin Nunez, £85m – they took a chance. You have to take a chance on these guys…

"Darwin Nunez should be doing a lot better than he is in terms of his finishing. If Liverpool can get £70m back from selling him, that would be great business.

"That’s too much money to avoid, you’ve got to roll the dice on that one for me. He’s got that Divock Origi vibe, but you just never know, but I’d sell him."

Nunez has made 122 appearances for Liverpool to date, returning 37 goals and 21 assists.
