No matter what he does or what he goes on to achieve, Justin Kluivert will be compared to his father, Patrick. It is the inevitable consequence of having one of the best strikers to play the game as a parent.

But he can always point to the fact that he scored more Premier League goals than his father did at St James’ Park.

It is a statistic that leaps out because, unlike his superstar dad, Justin has never played for Newcastle United.

Kluivert senior spent an entire season playing in black and white stripes and scored just one league goal. In truth, he was well beyond his pomp, those magical years at Ajax and Barcelona, when he arrived on Tyneside. He was slower and a little heavier too, but it is still a remarkable statistical quirk.

Patrick may argue he scored five goals at home, in all competitions, while a Newcastle player, but you suspect he will mainly just be thrilled for his son.

The 25-year-old was electric all afternoon, the highlight of his hat-trick a stunning long-range strike for the third, but he was not the only one.

“I had not heard that statistic until now,” laughed Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

“I played against his father and Patrick scored against me, he was a hell of a player. I think Justin uses that to his advantage, Patrick has been coaching him and he has all sorts of advice for him. Justin has this offensive power, he is always a threat but he has improved so much the last two years on his defensive work and his understanding of the game.

“Justin has scored three goals but his work-rate against [Sandro] Tonali, jumping into the press, the goals was just part of it.”

Bournemouth were brilliant. They were better than Newcastle – the Premier League’s most in-form team – in every single department; every area of the pitch. Despite a crippling injury crisis, they played the hosts at their own game and won all their individual battles, inflicting a crushing defeat on their opponents.

Newcastle could have set a club record for consecutive victories if they won here, but the sequence came to a sudden, sharp stop. It was a painful jolt, a reality check. We can quickly end all Newcastle being in a title race talk here.

Newcastle were so poor in a performance littered with individual errors and mistakes. Nobody played well, but there were shockers for the likes of Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento, Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak and Dan Burn. The midfield trio looked shattered, exhausted in body and mind. It was a game too far for a side that has started virtually every game at the busiest time of year and manager Eddie Howe admitted as much afterwards.

“Firstly I have to congratulate our opponent.” he said. “I thought Bournemouth were better than us. I thought they played very well and never allowed us to find our rhythm in the game.

“I was disappointed with our performance. That is not the level that we’ve played at for the last group of games. I thought we looked devoid of energy today, a real problem athletically, I thought.

“I don’t think any department survived, I don’t think any individuals survived in the sense of the levels they had been playing at previously.

“I may feel differently after watching the game back, but that’s how I feel now. I could beat myself over it, but it was difficult to change the team – we’d just won nine in a row.”

From the moment Kluivert scored the first after a period of sustained pressure after just six minutes you knew Newcastle were in trouble. They could not get close to Bournemouth’s players, they were slow to the second balls and there was no energy or bite in their play. The defence looked shambolic trying to play out from the back.

Bournemouth’s second goal came when Burn played a hospital pass to Bruno Guimarães, who lost possession to the wonderful Antoine Semenyo, who had a simple pass on to Kluivert. The side-footed finish lacked power but was still too good for goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to keep out.

The second half was no better from a Newcastle perspective, Bournemouth hit the post, had a goal ruled out by VAR and still scored another two goals, a stunner from Kluivert from 25 yards after he was not closed down and a fourth from Milos Kerkez as Newcastle’s defenders stood and watched.

This was only the second time Newcastle have lost by three or more goals at home since Howe became manager and Bournemouth thoroughly deserved to be the team that dished it out. What a moment for their supporters, most of whom made the long trip from the south coast on coaches that departed just after 2am to make a lunchtime kick-off.

They moved a point behind Newcastle with this win and the Cherries have a real chance of securing European football for the first time in their history. What a stunning achievement that would be.

As for Newcastle, the last time they played this badly they also conceded four goals away to Brentford and responded by winning the next nine on the spin. It is going to need a similar reaction because this was simply not good enough from anyone.

“That’s the reaction we have to try to give,” said a deflated Howe. “It’s different feeling from the Brentford game to this one.

“I have a level of sympathy for the players after today, just because we looked flat and exhausted. I just didn’t feel we had that gear that we usually have to turn to in our game. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t need to be critical of ourselves, because we do.”

As you would expect for a team that has won nine on the spin, Newcastle United have named an unchanged side for the visit of Bournemouth to bitterly cold St James’ Park.

If Eddie Howe’s side win today, they will set a new club record for consecutive victories, breaking the nine game run set by Kevin Keegan’s entertainers back in 1994. Rafael Benítez also won nine games in a row, but that was during Newcastle’s promotion winning campaign in the Championship in 2016.

Howe has done his best to avoid being dragged into talking about record breaking runs and insists it is not something that occupies his mind, but this is an important mental test for his players nonetheless.

This is a chance to secure a little bit of history and if Newcastle are going to win things, they need to be able to deliver in these sorts of moments. The typical Newcastle thing would be to drop points here and miss out on the record, but – as I have written this week – Howe wants to change that sort of narrative.

Bournemouth are a really good side and have gone ten games unbeaten themselves and were very close to winning at Chelsea in midweek. Interestingly, Howe has never beaten his former club as a manager in the Premier League, which adds another layer to the intrigue this lunchtime.

Eddie Howe’s black and white army

Eddie Howe is presiding over a golden period for Newcastle United, writes Luke Edwards. The club’s former captain, Alan Shearer, is just one of the prominent figures to suggest Newcastle are in the title race. They have the best form in the Premier League and although they are nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool and sit fourth in the table, momentum is with them, confidence is surging and the team are finding a variety of ways to overcome their opposition.

“I’m aware of what Alan said,” replied Howe when asked if he agreed Newcastle are title contenders. “I always say I have no problem with fans getting caught up in any kind of feeling. That’s absolutely encouraged.

“The players are slightly different. They have got to still be controlled. Sometimes that talk and those thoughts, you can take your focus on what you actually have to do to get there.

“But it’s important that we recognise our strengths and how strong we are. I think we are a really strong team playing well.”

Good morning and welcome to live coverage of the lunch-time kick-off between high-flying Newcastle United and Bournemouth.

Following their midweek win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Newcastle will set a club record of 10 consecutive wins if they prevail this afternoon. The current joint record of nine wins in a row in all competitions, came under the guidance of Kevin Keegan in 1994. Little wonder, then, that Newcastle fans are already talking about manager Eddie How in the same breath as Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson.

Newcastle’s opponents, however, will be in no mood to roll over and have their tummies tickled. Manager Andoni Iraola has, though, spoken about their title challenger status.

“It’s a big question,” Iraola said on the eve of this game. “They are not so far from [second-placed] Arsenal, for example, and Arsenal definitely are title challengers. Probably you need to ask Eddie the question. They are playing so, so well that it makes you ask me these questions.

“They are beating everyone, also they’ve done it in a run of games that was not easy: they beat Arsenal, [Manchester] United and Tottenham [Hotspur] in this period. They’ve performed better than them but I’m not brave enough to say it (that they are title contenders).”

Bournemouth’s on-loan goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has returned to contention after being ineligible against parent club Chelsea but Adam Smith, Julian Araujo, Marcos Senesi, Alex Scott, Marcus Tavernier and Luis Sinisterra remain sidelined.
