A second-half goal by defender Nuno Mendes earned Paris St Germain a 2-1 win at Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday but rivals Benfica topped Group H thanks to more away goals scored in all games.

Benfica thrashed Maccabi Haifa 6-1 in the other group game and the Portuguese and French teams ended level on 14 points, having drawn their two head-to-heads 1-1 and with a goal difference of nine.

Mbappe broke the deadlock in Turin in the 13th minute when he received the ball from Leo Messi and dodged through Juve’s defence to unleash a low shot inside the far post.

Juventus levelled shortly before halftime after Juan Cuadrado sent the ball into the six-yard box with a diving header and defender Leonardo Bonucci tapped it in for an equaliser.

PSG sealed the win in the 69th minute when Mbappe found Mendes with an excellent cross between two Juve players for the substitute to score within one minute of coming on.

Juventus secured the Europa League spot, finishing third on three points.

Juventus 1-2 PSG: Signs of life from Bianconeri but Benfica overtake lethargic Parisians

22:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

A much-improved Juventus side will at least be playing Europa League football after the World Cup despite losing to Paris Saint-Germain.

While that proves scant consolation amid an awful season for the Old Lady, Massimiliano Allegri can at least reflect on a strong performance against one of Europe’s form sides.

Granted, it’s difficult to expect PSG to play with anything approaching urgency even when they desperately need to win a game and their distinct lack of defensive effort must be taken into account, but Juve largely bossed the game, only undone by moments of individual magic.

Thierry Henry urges Juventus to follow Arsenal approach and stick with Massimiliano Allegri

19:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

Thierry Henry believes Mikel Arteta’s job at Arsenal should offer a blueprint for Juventus to follow.

Massimiliano Allegri has struggled since returning to the club last year, failing to arrest a decline that to have set in upon his departure in 2019.

While previously dominant in Serie A, Juve have finished only fourth since their last League title win in 2020.

Allegri replaced Antonio Conte – who has been linked with a return – in 2014, leading the Old Lady to five consecutive Scudettos as well as two Champions League finals.

In an effort to grow into a more progressive brand of football, Allegri was replaced by Maurizio Sarri before club legend Andrea Pirlo took over.

Chelsea tinged with regret as Samuel Iling-Junior rises to Juventus challenge

18:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

Samuel Iling-Junior’s two assists in 43 first-team minutes at Juventus have alerted the world to his talents and sent a tinge of regret toward Chelsea.

The 19-year-old has burst onto the scene in Turin after setting up a grandstand finish in his 20-minute cameo from the bench in his side’s 4-3 loss to Benfica in the Champions League last month.

Almost immediately after his introduction, he set up a goal for Arkadiusz Milik and two minutes later laid one on for Weston McKennie, without officially getting an assist.

He then set up the winning goal for Nicolo Fagioli away at Lecce in Serie A the following weekend. His impact in those two matches will be met with both pride and regret at Cobham, where he spent nine years in the Chelsea academy before leaving for Juventus in 2020.

Juventus star Paul Pogba out of the World Cup

17:51 , Jonathan Gorrie

Pogba underwent an operation on a keen problem in September but his agent said that, following a medical review, the midfielder would not yet return to the Juventus squad or join up with France for the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 World Cup.

“Following yesterday and today’s medical review in Torino and Pittsburgh, it is extremely painful to inform Paul Pogba will still need recovery time from his surgery,” his agent Rafaela Pimenta said.

“For this reason, Paul will not be able to join Juventus squad before the World Cup break nor the French National Team in Qatar. If wishful thinking would change things, Paul would be playing tomorrow.”

17:45 , Jonathan Gorrie

Lionel Messi believes England are among the favourites to win the World Cup - but he fears Brazil and France more.

Gareth Southgate’s side go to Qatar next month in poor form but remain a threat having reached last year’s European Championship final.

Argentina won the most recent Copa America but Messi, 35, told fans in his home country that repeating the feat at the World Cup will be incredibly difficult.

“For us Argentines, it’s hard to be calm,” he told DirecTV Sports, via Record. “We are always candidates, but it wasn’t always like that.
