Kabangu can't be Hearts one man show and carry huge weight of expectancy that has burdened Shankland - Ryan Stevenson

Elton Kabangu has made a flying start to life at Hearts.

But I really hope he doesn’t end up with the crushing weight of expectancy that has burdened Lawrence Shankland for way too long. Kabangu can’t be the answer to all the attacking issues. There has to be more both from inside the walls of Tynecastle and from others still not inside the building. It was brilliant to see Kabangu get off to his ideal beginning against Brechin City.

When you move to a new club, an instant impression is important and nabbing a couple of goals on debut is ideal for a striker. Straight away, you are off the mark but, naturally, other things come with that. The expectation levels rise, fans are immediately looking for it all the time and pinning all of their hopes onto the same shoulders.

It can’t be about one man and we’ve seen that with Shankland. I can’t remember any player at any club having such a burden as he has had to carry in the past year or so. He managed to cope with it through a magnificent last term but it was always going to catch up with him and now Shankland’s out of the side on the treatment table.

We don’t know how long that is going to be for and it’s terrific Kabangu is in the door and scoring already. But it’s crystal clear the club needs to keep adding more offensive weapons. There has to be more provisions added.

At least one more striker is needed to join the club and I’d be looking for one, or perhaps even two, wingers who can add goals to the team, too. That’s down to the recruitment department to get it right and make sure the correct individuals are sourced and signed.

Yet even if they do manage to find those gems before the end of the month, I’m still expecting more from those currently inside the dressing room. I know I sound like a broken record because I’ve harped on about it all season but there are guys in that squad who need to produce more.

It was good to see Yan Dhanda get on the scoresheet against Brechin. But he now has the same amount of goals this season for Hearts as Kabangu and the new boy’s only played 90 minutes.

I’m not picking on Dhanda but that is just not good enough for a player who operates in that area of the pitch for Hearts. Same goes for Kenneth Vargas and Alan Forrest. Two each for the season so far. If Kabangu has a look at the statistics, he’s going to feel the pressure before he even steps out onto the park again and that simply can’t happen as it will hinder him.

Jorge Grant hasn’t got a single goal this season. Given where he plays, I can barely take that in and the missed penalty up at Aberdeen in the last Premiership match is a prime example of the lack of cutting edge that is proving so costly.

Fair play to the boys in the backline because they’ve stepped up to the mark since that late nightmare in Dingwall against Ross County. Three straight cleans sheets before Brechin and that isn’t easy when a team is toiling for goals. I know what it’s like.

I was an offensively-minded player myself but I know the pressure that goes onto you when you start a game worried one slip could cost the match. It puts you on edge. It forces mistakes and bad decisions. I’ve no doubt the consistent failure to score at the other end has contributed to some of the errors at the back since the beginning of the season.

With Kye Rowles gone and Frankie Kent on the sidelines, Craig Halkett has stepped up and the signing of Jamie McCart is a solid one. Now Hearts are adding centre-back Michael Steinwender from Varnamo and there is enough there to cope with the term’s second-half.

But it’s not the case up-front. Far from it. We don’t know how long Shankland is going to be missing, or what the situation is with his future. As it happens, I believe, with Kabangu signed, it could ease the stress on the skipper and free him up to get back to better form. But it just can’t be left to them to carry the whole show.

Hearts still need to add more quality before the window closes and get a whole lot more of a contribution from some of the boys already in there.
