Kelechi Iheanacho to Celtic transfer could be revisited as Hoops hero bigs up the Kasper Schmeichel effect
John Hartson suspects Celtic could go back in for Kelechi Iheanacho this summer.
The Premiership champions failed in a January move for the Sevilla striker, who excelled under Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City. He ended up joining English Championship side Middlesbrough on loan from Sevilla in a Deadline Day switch, while the Hoops were left frustrated in their attempts to land a hitman, with Mathias Kvistgaarden proving too expensive and no other targets were attainable, leaving Adam Idah as the only recognised centre forward at Parkhead for the second half of the season.
However, Hartson wouldn't be surprised to see Rodgers try again for Iheanacho ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. He liked what he saw of the Nigerian with the Foxes, and having seen how well Kasper Schmeichel as settled into life playing under Rodgers again in Glasgow, the Welshman believes Iheanacho could have a similar impact at the other end of the pitch.

“The key issue to this is what Brendan did with Kasper Schmeichel,” Hartson told Go Radio. “I think when you worked with a player, previously, then you know his character, his strengths and weaknesses.
“Certainly, I think Kelechi Iheanacho was very good at Leicester. I think he is one of many that Brendan could possibly sign. I like the boy. I thought he was powerful. Good player and scored goals. Maybe that link-up, then everybody will get onto that link-up, with Iheanacho and Brendan. I think he is one of a few Brendan will be looking at.”
