Kendal Rugby victory moves them four points clear of relegation
Kendal Rugby moved four points clear of relegation with a dominant victory over Birkenhead Park.
The Mint Bridge side put on one of their best performances of the season, defeating the league's bottom team 47-5.
Birkenhead Park came into the match with newfound confidence after securing wins against Blackburn and Stoke, and a close game against Penrith.
Kendal, too, had shown promise in recent matches and were determined to capitalise on their form in front of a large home crowd.
From the outset, Kendal were in command.
Matt Houghton opened the scoring with a try from a second line-out drive, putting the hosts 5-0 up.
The Black and Ambers continued to pile on the pressure, with Devin Coyle seizing a loose ball from a Birkenhead Park attack to score his first league try of the season.
Jack Blocksidge added another try after a line-out win, giving Kendal a comfortable 15-0 lead.
The visitors managed to pull one back with a try from two penalties, but Kendal's defence remained resolute.
Jack Lane's try, set up by Ben Dixon's precise pass, extended the home side's lead to 20-5.
Kendal carried their momentum into the second half, with Ben Dixon scoring after a break down the wing by Jack Lane.
Aaron Stephens converted a penalty to take the score to 28-5.
Oscar Coxon then set up Ollie Rose for a try from halfway, which Stephens converted to make it 35-5.
Ben Dixon's infield kick led to another try for Rose, which Stephens again converted, taking the score to 42-5.
The final try came from a Ben Dixon break and kick, resulting in a penalty, with Tommy Calvert scoring his first try of the game, bringing the final score to 47-5.
The visitors finished strongly, retaining the ball in the Kendal 22 for a lengthy period.
However, Kendal's defence held firm, and they ended the game by kicking the ball dead.
The win sees Kendal move four points clear of the relegation zone.
They will be looking to build on this result when they host Anselmians on Saturday.
