Former Scotland international Kenny Logan has revealed how one insult ruined his proposal to Gabby Logan.

The first match of the Six Nations in the year 2000 saw Italy make their debut in the famous tournament. They defeated Scotland 34-20 in Rome, with the Scots having a calamitous day at the office.

Logan missed four kicks at goal on the day, all of them being relatively simple for a player of his ability.

It was a huge contrast to the previous year and competition - the Five Nations - where Scotland had won the tournament by beating England on points difference.

"I did once fly to Rome at the drop of a hat when you had a terrible day for Scotland," Gabby said on the Sports Agents podcast. "And I got there at midnight, because my friend said to me 'he looks like he needs a hug'.

"And then we got a 5am flight back the following morning."

"Yeah, that was pretty special," explained Kenny. "I was outside the Trevi Fountain. I was going to ask her to marry me. I thought: 'I'm going to ask her to marry us. She's just amazing.'

"And this guy came up: 'Hey Logan, you had a s***er today, by the way.' And he just stopped me. You've saved me, thanks very much, mate! You don't realise what you've just done."

Scotland went on to finish in fifth place, with Italy finishing in last. England won the tournament, ending with two points more than the French.

Kenny eventually proposed to Gabby in Spain. Although it didn't quite go to plan, as the former rugby star revealed in his autobiography. He explained that firstly asking her father Terry Yorath was quite difficult.

“Finally, I gathered all my willpower and forced myself to say, ‘Terry I want to marry Gabby’," he wrote.

“He didn’t flinch. ‘Does she want to marry you?’ I replied: ‘What? Yeah. Well I think so.’

“He said: ‘I don’t know... that’s not the vibe I’m getting.’ The debate went on, as did the drinking, and by the time we left the restaurant I couldn’t work out whether he’d said yes or not. Terry came in for breakfast the next morning and didn’t say a word on the subject. This was becoming unbearable."

Yorath then woke up the next day with a renewed perspective: "It would be an honour to have you as my son-in-law.”
