Khivcha Kvaratskhelia transfer shouldn't hide truth about Liverpool options

As Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Omar Marmoush reportedly edge closer to joining Paris Saint-Germain and Man City respectively, there will be those of a Liverpool persuasion desperate to see the Reds pounce. The Georgian is a long-standing player of interest to Anfield bosses, while Arne Slot’s men have been linked with the Egyptian all season long.

Liverpool have form for snatching signings from under the noses of others too of course, with Luis Diaz one of the more famous recent examples of their opportunistic approach.

Signed from FC Porto in a deal worth up to £49m in January 2022, the Reds made their move mid-season once realising they risked missing out to Tottenham Hotspur if they held out until the summer.

Yet it should not be a surprise if Liverpool do not make an 11th hour swoop this time around, even if they had previously been tipped to move for Kvaratskhelia if he pushed to leave Napoli.

Slot’s ranks already boast six senior forwards, after all, with it proving challenging enough to give them all the desired and required game-time - never mind adding a seventh international into the mix - as Federico Chiesa in particular has already found out.

Liverpool were handed a reminder of the talents they already have at their disposal against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup third round on Saturday. As Slot named a much-changed side, Diogo Jota opened the scoring - assisted by Darwin Nunez - while Chiesa capped off a lively cameo with his first goal for the Reds as he looks to ignite his Anfield career.

The Uruguayan is suspended for Liverpool’s next match - away at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night - but regardless, it would be little surprise if the selected forwards against Accrington all gave way for Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz at the City Ground.

With Chiesa off the mark, all of the Reds’ senior forwards have now scored this season. Throw in teenager Jayden Danns - who also scored against Accrington - and Harvey Elliott - who started on the right against the League Two outfit - and Liverpool’s attacking players boast 59 goals and 30 assists between them so far this season.

While a new arrival would be a shot in the arm, their attacking department is not one that is letting down the Reds.

Admittedly, the arrival of Diaz presented Jurgen Klopp with seven senior forwards back in 2022 - but that included Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi, who were navigating the final months of their Anfield careers.

They would start just five Premier League and Champions League matches between them all season long, with Liverpool’s current hand arguably stronger than the attacking contingent that fell agonisingly short when they pursued an unprecedented quadruple three years ago.

Surely something would have to give for the Reds to sign a new forward now before January. That is not to say it won’t, of course, as Nunez continues to be linked with a move away. Yet Chiesa’s agent has insisted he is staying put for the season at least, with Slot challenging him to prove his worth for Liverpool during the second half of the campaign.

Scoring against Accrington was just a ‘good next step’ against a League Two team, as Slot pointed out in his post-match press conference, but it is a ‘good next step’ all the same.

With Liverpool now travelling to Forest without the suspended Nunez, it will be curious to see if Chiesa is granted the opportunity to take his next step - even if a second Premier League appearance will likely only come from the bench.

Despite links with Kvaratskhelia and Marmoush, and the pair being poised to move on, the Reds have not yet made a move. It is perhaps worth noting amid such speculation that they remain in contract negotiations with their star attacker in Salah.

While plenty has been said about his handling of the saga, be it speaking publicly in interviews or cryptically on social media, the club will have their own tactics up their sleeves and not be pushovers when it comes to agreeing an extension.

A shiny new attacker is always exciting, with Marmoush’s returns this season of 19 goals and 12 assists from 25 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt certainly enough to leave fans licking lips.

Kvaratskhelia has a more modest five goals and three assists from 19 outings for Napoli, but has already established himself as one of European football’s most talented up and coming forwards. But is that enough to start ahead of Diaz or Gakpo?

As talented as they are, are they obvious upgrades on what Slot already has at his disposal? Diaz and Gakpo boast 12 goals each, with the Dutchman frequently pointing out their combined totals from shared game-time equates to Salah’s own 21-goal haul.

But now the Dutchman has found a way to unleash the trio together, with Diaz down the middle. The Colombian, Gakpo, Jota and Nunez ensure Liverpool are well-covered when it comes to both central and left-sided forwards.

Can the hexet be improved on? Perhaps, though less so the starting trio. But if Jota stays fit, Nunez rediscovers his shooting boots and Chiesa now pushes on after scoring his first Reds goal, what more could you ask for?

Like it or not, there is seemingly currently no room at the inn for more Liverpool attackers. And while it might be frustrating if the Reds opt against moving for Kvaratskhelia and he ends up joining PSG, it should not be overlooked what they already have at their disposal.

There will have to be many moving parts if Liverpool are to now pounce. But while the Georgian could strengthen their already existing hand, having already set Reds imaginations racing, Slot’s men will not be left short if such a transfer does not come to fruition.
