'You have to knuckle down and be ready' - Burgess on competition in Town's squad
Ipswich Town defender Cameron Burgess has admitted that he would like to play more minutes in the Premier League but understands that competition in the squad will increase their chances of avoiding relegation.
The Blues have plenty of options in most areas at the pitch, including centre-back, where the 29-year-old Autralian international is one of four natural options competing for two starting spots.
Manager Kieran McKenna does not tend to carry one on the bench, with versatile duo Axel Tuanzebe and Ben Godfrey also capable of covering those positions.
As a result, Burgess has played just 10 Premier League games for Town – most of which came during Jacob Greaves’ hamstring injury. However, he’s purely focused on performing to the best of his ability to give himself the best chance of being picked.
“Everyone wants to play games, that’s what we’re here to do,” he explained. “I think, if you could finish the season and you have played every game in the Premier League, you’d be pretty happy, right?
“That’s not always going to be the case. With the group we have got here, it’s going to be competition for places. You have to knuckle down and be ready when you get the chance.
“Many of us have been in that situation in the last two or three years that we have been here, so it’s definitely a squad game for us.
“That’s where our strength lies for us in this league. We have to continue to remember that.
“It’s the manager’s decision, who he picks to play. The competition is what drives us forward and that probably gives the manager some tough decisions to make at times. On that front, I’m thankful it’s not my decision to make!
“I want to play as many games as I can. Hopefully I have shown that I can play at this level and I guess that’s the ultimate goal – to play as many games as you can, to win as many games as you can, and continue to stay in this league.”
