Kyogo endures nightmare Rennes debut as Celtic hero equals unwanted 18 year Ligue 1 record
Whilst Jota enjoyed a dream return to Celtic, Kyogo suffered a nightmare Rennes debut.
The Japanese star, who clocked up 85 goals in 165 games during a glittering four year spell with Celtic found things tough on his Ligue 1 debut - as he was limited to just seven touches of the ball before being hooked with 66 minutes on the clock. And stats from Opta show that Kyogo set matched an unwanted 18 year record on his first appearance. Touching the ball just seven times during the 1-0 home victory against Strasbourg equalled the lowest total for a player playing at least 60 minutes in a Ligue 1 match since Mathieu Robail during Lille-Valenciennes in April 2007.
And that left supporters of his new side underwhelmed with what they saw from their £10m marquee signing, with one Rennes fan saying: "Furuhashi was quite worrying in the first-half, he was totally lost. Another fan added: "I found Kyogo completely lost and not very useful, Méïté who came on did much better than him." Another posted: "Kyogo was quite ghostly in the game but put in a lot of effort," whilst a slightly more upbeat supporter added: "The Japanese forward is not very visible but he is interesting in his pressing, he will have opportunities if he continues like this."

The ghost theme continued with other fans less than impressed. One wrote: "Kyogo is absolutely transparent. So this is his first match, far from me the idea of burying him, especially since I really think he is a good player, but his match was very bad." Another said: "Kyogo shows absolutely nothing for the moment, quite worried about his integration into this team."
And even those fans who once worshipped him were in no mood to be sentimental, with one Hoops supporter saying: "Kyogo whipped off after 66 minutes Jota on after 65 minutes and scores the decider, would have liked the wee man to score on debut but another one that thinks grass is greener learn the hard way."
It's already been a difficult start to life in France, with the manager who signed him, Jorge Sampaoli, sacked just two days after he joined the club. In a statement, Rennes - who sold Jota to Celtic after he had struggled for gametime with the club - said: "By mutual agreement, Stade Rennais F.C. and Jorge Sampaoli, who was coach of the professional team, are ending their collaboration. Stade Rennais F.C. are grateful for his commitment and respectful of his remarkable professional experience, and wish Jorge Sampaoli every success in his future career."
