Guard D'Angelo Russell spoke highly of Redick and what he's been able to do during training camp with a roster that returns several players from last year's squad.
"Obviously a lot of things are being thrown at us at the moment," Russell told reporters Thursday. "It's early. It's training camp, preseason and all that. I think the progression we've had here the last few days has been great and it's something to look forward to."
The Lakers' starting lineup for the regular season is expected to include Russell playing alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.
"We have some familiarity with some of the core guys that are here and returning healthy from last year," Russell said. "I think the verbiage is high IQ. We know JJ is a high-IQ guy and our leaders are high-IQ guys. I think you start at the top and it's easy to sprinkle down."
Here's what you need to know as the Lakers' preseason begins:
Will LeBron James and Anthony Davis play during the preseason?
LeBron James and Anthony Davis are expected to bring a level of star power to the preseason with both expected to play.
Redick told reporters that the duo will be in action at some point when the team travels to Palm Springs for a pair of games.
"We are still talking through it but they are going to play this weekend," Redick said. "We are still talking through what minutes and rotations will look like for everyone."
Redick wouldn't commit to much more detail but mentioned that a lot of strategy will be based on real-time and how players are feeling during those exhibition matchups.
Update: LeBron and Davis did not play on Friday night against Minnesota.
Opinion: J.J. Redick equipped for Lakers job, high shine of L.A. But that doesn't guarantee success
