Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of 2005-born attacker Romain Esse from Millwall for a fee potentially rising to £14.5m.

The 19-year-old has penned a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Eagles and will wear the 21 shirt for Oliver Glasner's side.

Esse’s departure from SE16 is Millwall’s record sale, trumping their shift of George Saville to Middlesbrough for £6.5m in 2018. Alongside their club record fee, Millwall have negotiated a sell-on clause in the deal.

Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman has been on numerous scouting missions to the Den this term, with a keen eye on Esse.

The winger becomes the 12th player to join the Eagles from their South London rivals.

Esse has eight goal contributions in 66 senior appearances for the Lions after breaking through from the academy in December 2022.

Born in Lambeth, he has represented England from Under-18s to Under-20s, with his most recent international appearance in the U20s Elite League in November.

He will be eligible for his first Premier League outing when Crystal Palace take on Brentford on Sunday, 26th January.

Announcing the deal, Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parish said: “We are delighted to welcome Romain to Crystal Palace, and we’re looking forward to working with him to continue his impressive progress to date.

“Romain is the type of player who gets crowds off their seats – the type of player long associated with South London and Crystal Palace Football Club – and everyone at the club is looking forward to watching him shine out on the pitch, and fulfil his exciting potential.”

Esse added: "I’m very excited to be here. It’s a good project and a good opportunity, so I just can’t wait to get started.”
