Larkhall YMCA Harriers athletes have been busy in recent weeks, with a few good medal wins.

On February 9, junior members Laci McNulty, Sam Thomson, Sophie Brennan and Emily Thomson represented Larkhall Academy at the Scottish Schools’ Indoor Championships.

Performance of the day came from Laci McNulty winning silver in the 200m, with a new PB of 26.97.

Aaron Partridge competed in the Falkirk 7-Hour Ultra Marathon on the same day, where athletes complete as many laps as possible in the time limit, and managed 53.5 miles.

Partridge said: “This win was a huge confidence boost for me, going into upcoming events that I have planned for the rest of this year. The hours of work that goes into this every week is paying off, and I couldn’t be more motivated for what is ahead.

“I hope this encourages and inspires anyone chasing a running goal. If you work hard, push limits and put in the time, you will succeed.”

Junior and senior Harriers kicked off January with strong performances in the Glasgow Amateur Athletics Association Under-12s fun day and at the Scottish Indoor National Championships, where several competed for the first time, or set new PBs across several events, including sprints, jumps and hurdles.

On February 2, coach and masters athlete Alastair Dooey took part in the Scottish Athletics National Indoor Masters Championships at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, taking bronze in both 60m and 200m.

The start of the year also saw Larkhall Harriers launch their first ever beginner-specific group. Part of the Scottish Athletics JogScotland programme, it is specifically targeted at people who are new to running, or long detached from the sport.

Harriers were hoping to attract between 16 and 20 people, but ended up with 40 sign-ups, aged between 18 and 66.

All ‘Couch to 5k’ training takes place near their Caledonian Road premises, and uses a 1k course known locally as ‘the triangle’.

It will come to a head on April 12 when they travel to Strathclyde Park for their ‘graduation’ 5k.

Harriers athletes will compete in the Alloa Half-Marathon on Sunday, March 16, London Marathon in April and Edinburgh Marathon in May, plus many road and track competitions, and the Scottish National Cross Country Championships.
