Marcus Smith thrills Twickenham crowd but Dan Cole snatches draw for Leicester
Leicester Tigers’ last appearance in the Big Game against Harlequins had been a high-scoring draw, 30-30, back in 2019. Both sides successfully surpassed that five years on, thrilling a bumper crowd at the bigger Stoop with Harlequins’ rapid wing Cadan Murley scoring two of their four tries before Dan Cole’s try snatched a late draw and bonus point for the visitors.
This is traditionally turkey season but a sell-out Twickenham crowd were hungry for goose steps from Marcus Smith, and the England No 10 duly delivered with a number of enjoyable bits of footwork throughout the first 40 minutes, particularly for Jack Walker’s opening try. Smith’s assist was so good that he was celebrating while being tackled to the ground by Handre Pollard.

Harlequins had only won one of their last four league matches coming into this and, by kick-off, the gap between themselves in eighth and the top four sides was an ominous 10 points. They had to win here and win big, so this felt very much like two points dropped.
“Our attacking game tonight looked way more like Harlequins. When you score 34 points and you’re up with a minute to go, you would like to see the game out. To me, that should have been five points,” conceded Harlequins head coach Danny Wilson.
After Smith’s early finesse it was Leicester who appeared in command, with Ollie Hassell-Collins continuing his good form while a sharp Freddie Steward counter-attack led to Solomone Kata’s try to give Leicester a 10-point lead.
And then Leicester botched a five-metre line-out with Harlequins’ line in their sights and the wheels came off. Jack Kenningham’s break led to Murley easily beating Steward and, after Kata’s yellow card for a high tackle on Oscar Beard, Harlequins struck again through Luke Northmore before the break to go into half-time leading 21-20.
Leicester, to their credit, rediscovered their composure during the interval. Hassell-Collins, this time roving off his wing to give the attack an extra man, drew in two defenders before Leicester recycled to send Steward over for a try and the lead again, boosted by Pollard’s conversion.

Such was Michael Cheika’s displeasure with a penalty against Pollard for an early tackle on Beard that the coach was left covering his mouth and shaking his head in disbelief. That decision led to three more points from Smith off the tee to draw the game level at 27-27.
The contest was delicately poised, waiting to see who would land a final punch. So often Alex Dombrandt comes up with deft touches in the wider channels and it was his flicked pass, before getting whacked in a big tackle by Steward, which set up Murley for his second try and secured the bonus point for Harlequins. Cheika had a slightly different view of Dombrandt’s assist. “The pass went two metres forward.”
Shutting down Leicester’s maul close to their try line felt huge for Harlequins with six minutes to go. There cannot have been a more popular replacement announcement than when 37-year-old Cole was introduced, and while he was left sarcastically applauding a scrum free-kick against Leicester in the final minutes Cole later had much more to celebrate, squeezing over for a try after a tapped penalty with one minute left on the clock.

“He is Leicester through and through,” Cheika said of the veteran tighthead. “He is still ripping into the guys at training, still investing so much into the team and the club. He never lies, Coley, so I knew he got the ball down.”
Pollard snuck the resulting conversion in off a post, meaning the two sides could not be separated and both took home three points.

The thoughts of Michael Cheika
“It is always points gained which keeps us with the top group of teams. The way things have gone against us in the game through our own fault we hung in nicely. We take this three and stay close. It is not a point ot prove and we are trying to build something for the long-term in terms of attitude. We were much tougher and physical than last week. We had multiple opportunities down at the goal-line and we simple did not execute.”

Marcus Smith speaking post-match
“The last time we played Leicester in the Big Game it was a draw as well. It shows how closely contested this league is. We will be frustrated by this one. These are the games you want to play in. It was a special atmosphere and you have to make the most of it. We spoke a lot about their kicking game and our forwards did a good job. We have to get more consistent in our performances which we are striving for. If we do that the results will come.”
07:54 PM GMT
The thoughts of Olly Cracknell
“It was back and forth. When we watch it back we gave them some easy ins but credit to them. There were a lot of tired bodies at the end but we knew if we got down there we are pretty efficient. We will be frustrated. We are happy with the second half but frustrated with the draw. It was a big step up from last week. We wanted to show more intent today and we did so we want to build on that.”
07:51 PM GMT
Man of the match Cadan Murley
“You can look at it either way. It was back to more of the Harlequins way. Not scoring at Gloucester really hurt. We spoke about playing without fear, being brave and playing with courage. Hopefully we can get a better balance going forward. The message at half-time was simple; we needed to be more physical. We need to get the balance right between attack and defence. We need to go back to our roots.”

TRY! Murley over to give hosts the lead after questionable Dombrandt pass
Murley is in but was it a forward pass from Dombrandt? Harlequins ship it down their left and the final pass on the edge of the Leicester 22 from Dombrandt looked like it went forward to Murley but the on-field decision of try stands. Smith gets the conversion and Harlequins lead by seven with just under ten minutes left. Looking at the replays that appears to be a poor decision. From multiple angles it looks forward and I suspect Michael Cheika will have something to say about that post-match.
07:31 PM GMT

58 mins: Harlequins 24 Leicester 27
Dombrandt hacks the ball forward towards the Leicester line and Brown slides to gather the ball. It looked like he would go over his own line but somehow Leicester recycle and clear their lines when it appeared they would concede a scrum.
07:17 PM GMT
TRY! Steward scores to give visitors the lead
Leicester go through the phases within 10 metres of the Harlequins line and this time they get over the line. They ship it wide to the right and Murley looks like he is going to intercept. It goes to the ground and Leicester pick it back up, sending it out to Steward, who scores. The TMO did check to see if Brown had knocked the ball forward in the incident with Murley but it appeared Murley dropped it rather than Brown knocking it on as the two players came together. Pollard lands the conversion and Leicester are back into the lead.

It is high and always high from Kata. Hassell-Collins is making the tackle initially on Beard but Kata does not bend at the hip. Kata has seen red a few times in 2024 but he is going to escape a red card as referee Matthew Carley believes there is mitigation with the other tackler changing the dynamic of the tackle. Kata is sent to the bin and is perhaps slightly fortunate that he did not see red there.

TRY! Hassell-Collins scores under the posts
A terrific offload off the floor to Reffell sends the Welshman charging into the Harlequins 22. They send it wide to the right and Hassell-Collins gets them to within five metres of the try line. They earn themselves multiple penalty advantages but they do not need it as Hassell-Collins is sent under the posts untouched after Pollard found him in space as Leicester shipped it out to the backs. Pollard lands the easiest of conversion and the away side re-establish their advantage.
06:06 PM GMT
TRY! Walker over after Smith brilliance
The hosts respond quickly and it comes as a result of superb skill from Smith. He receives a box kick from van Poortvliet just inside the Leicester half and comes down the short side. Superb footwork gets him to the outside and then a clever dummy allows him to break through the line. He then offloads inside to Walker, who goes over untouched for the first try of the match. Smith lands the conversion and the hosts take the lead 7-3.

Match preview
It is time for Big Game 16 from Twickenham as Harlequins host Leicester Tigers at HQ in front of a sell-out 82,000 crowd at Allianz Stadium as we approach the halfway mark of the Premiership season. Both sides are looking to avenge defeats in round eight. Harlequins, whose only victory in their last four Premiership matches came at Exeter in round six, lost 14-0 at Gloucester last week whilst Leicester fell to a heavy 54-24 home loss to Bristol. The home side are eighth, ten points off Saracens who occupy the final spot in the top four. Leicester are fifth, four points behind Saracens.
These sides met in the first ever Big Game back in 2008, which ended in an exciting 26-26 draw. Mike Brown, who starts on the wing for Leicester tonight aged 39, scored for Harlequins on that night. Danny Care, who starts at nine tonight for the hosts, is the only player to have played in every Big Game and started at scrum-half for Harlequins in that game back in 2008. These sides also met in Big Game 12 and that match also ended in a draw, 30-30 on that occasion. Over the course of 15 Big Games, Harlequins have been victorious on nine occasions, drawing three and losing three. They have not lost since Big Game 7, when they lost 25-30 to Northampton Saints in December 2014.
The hosts have a very strong recent record at HQ; their only loss in their last ten visits to Allianz Stadium came in a 35-45 defeat to Bath in April 2023. The last four fixtures between the two clubs have all been won by the away side on the day, so are the omens in Leicester’s favour tonight? Earlier at Twickenham these clubs met in the Women’s Premiership with Harlequins victorious, winning 42-17. The home fans will be hoping for a repeat in the men’s game.
