Hull City midfielder Xavier Simons is closing in on a move to League One promotion-chasers Wycombe Wanderers after turning down moves elsewhere in the January window.

The Chairboys sit second in League One, four points behind leaders Birmingham City, though the Blues do have two games in hand. But they are four points clear of Wrexham in third and a healthy 15-point advantage on Leyton Orient in the final playoff berth and look in a good place to secure promotion back to the Championship.

After a promising pre-season and start to the new campaign under Tim Walter, Simons has fallen down the pecking order under Ruben Selles. And with the arrivals of Eliot Matazo and Matt Crooks, coupled with the impressive form of Steven Alzate, the ex-Chelsea youngster has been told he can move on to play regular football.

Since Selles arrived in early December, the 21-year-old, who turns 22 later in February, has played just four times, with his last appearance coming off the bench in the pulsating 3-3 draw with Leeds United, and hasn't been in the squad in the last two games.

Simons was wanted by Swedish side AIK but made it clear he wants to remain in England, and after City turned down an approach by Championship rivals QPR, Wycombe have moved to snap up the 21-year-old on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

The defensive midfielder became a firm fixture in Walter's midfield and scored his first two Tigers goals in successive 1-1 draws against Burnley and Derby County back in late October. In total, Simons has played 38 times for the club, 22 of which came this term with 20 in the Championship.

After initially arriving on loan from Chelsea back in September 2022, Simons was signed permanently by Liam Rosenior in March 2023 and signed a contract until the summer of 2026, with the club having the option of a further 12 months, but spent last season on loan at Fleetwood Town.

Simons' departure from City is not expected to be the only one before Monday's 11pm deadline with Andy Smith also likely to move to a club in League Two, with both Gillingham and Leyton Orient understood to be keen on signing the defender. It's also understood that Brandon Fleming is likely to remain with the club's Under-21 setup after a move to a League Two club fell through.
