ISLE of Wight football side East Cowes Vics fell short in their Velocity Wessex League Cup fixture against a formidable Premier Division side.

A confident Vics welcomed AFC Porchester to Beatrice Avenue on Tuesday, coming into the game on the back of seven straight league wins.

Their opposition, however – flying high at the top of their respective league – were also enjoying a rich vein of form.

Three minutes in, the Islanders had the first chance of the game; a pinpoint cross from Jordan Chapman picking out Scott Jones, whose effort sailed narrowly wide.

Porchester’s first effort didn’t come until the 22-minute mark – a shot wide of the target.

The Islanders were largely matching their Premier League opponents and spurned a promising chance on 36 minutes; a great ball from Adam Voller picking out Jones, who mistimed his volley.

On the stroke of half time, Portchester won a free kick just inside the Vics’ half, the ball was floated in and found the head of a Porchester player, who broke the deadlock.

Second half, the Islanders were desperate to restore parity and came to rue another missed chance on 51 minutes.

A further effort was blocked on 66 minutes and a 78-minute curling shot sailed just wide.

When Rafferty Boyd-Kerr was sin binned for dissent on 87 minutes, his side’s chance of taking the game to penalties all but disappeared.

The game ended 1-0.
