League Cup quarter-final draw: Tottenham face Man Utd, Arsenal take on Crystal Palace
It will be an all-Premier League quarter-final in the League Cup after Arsenal knocked Preston out in the round of 16 on Wednesday night.
The north London side will face Crystal Palace in the next round. Oliver Glasner’s side have made it to the quarter-final of the competition for the first time in 12 years after a 2-1 victory at Villa Park.
Tottenham handed Manchester City their first defeat of the season as goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr secured them a 2-1 victory at home and a place in the quarter-final. They will face Manchester United in another home draw in the next round after interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy led his side to a much-needed 5-2 win over Leicester.
Liverpool beat Brighton 3-2 at the Amex to secure a place in the quarter-final and will face Southampton in the next round after they knocked Stoke City out on Tuesday evening.
The final draw sees Newcastle host Brentford, who beat Sheffield Wednesday in a penalty shoot-out to progress to the next round. At St James’ Park on Wednesday evening, Newcastle handed Chelsea a 2-0 defeat which saw the finalists of last year’s tournament make an early exit from this year’s competition.
The quarter-final matches will be played in the week commencing December 16.

Unai Emery speaks to Sky Sports following his side’s defeat:
“We started with 11 players who are in the first-team. We started with Tyrone Mings and Diego Carlos and they can play normally in the starting 11.
“We started with Maatsen, Kamara, McGinn, Duran and Buendia. I don’t know if I can have any regrets.
“We are with our way and building the team. Today we competed and we lost but we competed with the idea of players getting performances.
“The most important thing for me after the result, of course we are frustrated, but if I repeated it again I would play with the same players.”

Oliver Glasner speaks to Sky Sports
On Eze and Wharton:
“Started the game well and having to make the first sub [Eze], the problem was the hamstring and we don’t know how serious it is. We concede and then have Adam’s [Wharton] groin issue.
“Yesterday he said he was fine but his pain got worse. It’s too early but I am positive as it’s nothing new. He has had groin problems for many months.
“We thought he needed a break but yesterday he gave the thumbs up.”
On Eze’s goal:
“Our goal was similar to the Tottenham goal so I am very proud of the performance.”

Cody Gakpo speaks to Sky Sports
On his two goals:
“I think two good goals but I think maybe it should have been more or maybe I get an assist as well. But yeah very happy with the goals.”
On the young players:
“Very good, [Tyler] Morton started who doesn’t start that often then Trey [Nyoni] came in, and the goalie obviously and I think they did fantastic. Very proud of them and proud of the whole team. It’s not easy if you don’t play that often then suddenly to have to play.
“Everyone did well so really proud of them and really proud of the team.”
On progressing to the next round:
“Every competition you play in you want to win, so very happy we went through and on to the next.”

When the time comes, we will bring you all of the draws here...
09:39 PM GMT
Full-time: Aston Villa 1 Crystal Palace 2
What a night for Glasner and his Crystal Palace side!
After securing their first Premier League win of the season at the weekend, they’ve progressed to the quarter-finals of the League Cup for the first time in 12 years.
09:38 PM GMT
Full-time: Preston 0 Arsenal 3
It wasn’t to be for Preston as they fall quietly to defeat at Deepdale.
A much-changed Arsenal side cruise into the quarter-finals.
09:37 PM GMT
Full-time: Newcastle 2 Chelsea 0
A great night for Newcastle after the hugely disappointing defeat at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
Newcastle are through to the quarter-finals of the League Cup for a third season in a row and Chelsea, finalists in last year’s competition, are out in the round of 16.
09:35 PM GMT
Into added time
Just minutes left to play... Newcastle, Crystal Palace, and Arsenal are moving closer and closer to victory.
09:31 PM GMT
Chelsea struggling for breakthrough
Newcastle haven’t managed to create many chances this half but have been happy to concede possession with Chelsea struggling to pose any real threat.
A bleak night for Maresca’s side.
09:28 PM GMT
Crystal Palace edging closer to victory
It’s all Villa at the moment - they’re desperate for a way back into this match.
Duran has had chance after chance but the Palace defence are giving it everything they’ve got.
They’ve not made it to the League Cup quarter-finals in 12 years. This would be a massive victory for them.
09:24 PM GMT
Full-time: Brighton 2 Liverpool 3
It’s not to be for the hosts as Liverpool manage to hold them off and secure victory at the Amex.
Lamptey’s 90th minute goal gave Brighton some hope with five minutes left to play, but a Gakpo brace and Diaz goal were enough for Liverpool to progress to the quarter-finals.
Arne Slot’s impressive record on the road continues.
09:19 PM GMT
GOAL!
Brighton 2 Liverpool 3 (Lamptey, 90)
Brighton get one back!
Late drama at the Amex as Lamptey scores his first goal in two years. His shot takes a big deflection off Quansah who has really struggled tonight. Jaros has no chance but to watch as the ball sails into his net.
There will be five minutes of added time - could Brighton pull off a late comeback...?
09:18 PM GMT
Newcastle close to a third
Longstaff has the ball in the net but his effort is ruled offside.
Chelsea have been much improved in this second half but have struggled to find that breakthrough. They’ve lacked quality in the final third and Newcastle have punished them for it.
09:15 PM GMT
GOAL!
Brighton 1 Liverpool 3 (Diaz, 85)
A short-lived period of hope for Brighton as Diaz fires his side’s third goal home.
It’s very sloppy from Brighton at the back. Steele initially makes a great save to deny Jones but his side fail to clear their lines.
Diaz weaves through the defence - there are plenty of Brighton players in the box but they are just too passive. He forces in his side’s third and that will surely be that.
09:09 PM GMT
GOAL!
Aston Villa 1 Crystal Palace 2 (Kamada, 64)
The visitors are back in front!
Kamada - Eze’s replacement after he was forced off with an injury - runs onto a loose pass from Carlos, he drives past Karama and fires his shot into the bottom corner.
Emery was absolutely fuming on the touchline.
Palace’s second goal against the run of play - how will Villa respond?
Palace have regained the lead – and the substitute Kamada has put the Eagles back in front in the 64th minute.
The Japan international – a free transfer from Lazio in the summer – punished a poor pass out from the back by Kosta Nedeljkovic to McGinn, which he easily intercepted before steering a low effort past Joe Gauci into the bottom corner.

GOAL!
Brighton 1 Liverpool 2 (Adingra, 81)
Game on!
A heavy touch from Quansah gifts possession to the host. Ferguson capitalises and shoots from the edge of the box. Jaros saves but spills the ball. Adingra reacts immediately and pokes it home.
09:03 PM GMT
Villa searching for a second
Duran looks intent on getting his second of the night. He has come closest to getting a breakthrough goal for the hosts who have really grown into the game.
Maatsen drives forward and sees his shot blocked. Duran gets on the rebound and attempts to guide it into the net but his effort flies just wide.
09:00 PM GMT
GOAL!
Preston 0 Arsenal 3 (Havertz, 57)
Substitute Havertz gets Arsenal’s third - they’re in cruise control at Deepdale.
It’s a strong header into the back of the net. Surely that’s game over.

A let-off for Newcastle?
Ooohhh Anthony Gordon might just be a lucky boy as his lunge on Marc Cucurella is judged to only warrant a yellow card. And there is no VAR to intervene.
Gordon had lost the ball and a promising attack had broken down and it was a frustrated tackle. Enzo Maresca was furious on the touchline, arguing with Newcastle’s assistant manager Jason Tindall.
08:58 PM GMT
Arsenal ring the changes
The chasm in resources between the two sides was underlined by Arsenal’s half-time introductions of £100 million worth of talent in Kai Havertz and Thomas Partey.
Jurrien Timber was the man to make way for Partey which Arsenal fans will be hoping is nothing injury-related.
Timber came off early against Liverpool on Sunday.
08:53 PM GMT
GOAL!
Brighton 0 Liverpool 2 (Gakpo, 63)
Gakpo at the double!
After a slow opening 45 minutes, Liverpool have really shifted into gear in this second half.
Lamptey is at fault in the build-up - he’s having a tough night - as Gakpo muscles him off the ball and breaks towards the Brighton box.
The Dutchman beats Steele at his near post and fires his shot into the back of the net.
Whatever Jaros can do, Jason Steele can match. After Lamptey slipped trying to control a clearance from a Brighton corner, Liverpool burst forward.
Gakpo and Diaz bore down on Steele, but he stood his ground and saved brilliantly from Diaz.
It was not long before Liverpool pounced, however. Lamptey was again at fault, dawdling over the ball, allowing Gakpo to steal it off him, advance and hammer it beyond Steele, who this time could do nothing about it.
08:50 PM GMT
Here we go...
In the 7:45pm kick-offs, the second halves are starting to get underway.
Can Chelsea find a way back at St James’ Park? Who will break the stalemate at Villa Park?
These ties will all be decided tonight - stay tuned as we bring you all the latest updates and goals.
08:41 PM GMT
Jaros makes his mark on debut
Vitezslav Jaros has just marked his first team debut for Liverpool with the most stunning save to preserve his team’s lead.
Lampey had accelerated down the right wing, beaten a couple of defenders and crossed to an unmarked Simon Adingra. His header was well directed, but Jaros somehow arced his back to push it on to the post. Things geting lively here.
08:40 PM GMT
Half-time: Aston Villa 1 Crystal Palace 1
An exciting first 45 minutes at Villa Park. It was all Palace at the start, with Eze’s goal giving the visitors a massive confidence boost.
However Duran once again propelled Villa right back into the game and, after his goal, the hosts haven’t looked back. They were the dominant side and might have hoped that first half went on for longer.
The half ends with a fierce drive from Leon Bailey that flies straight at Turner after Villa struggle to break down a packed line of yellow Palace shirts.
At half-time it’s 1-1 at Villa Park. An interesting combo you won’t have heard before at the interval as the PA announcer has just revealed an exclusive link-up between Adidas and rock band Black Sabbath . . . for a limited edition shirt. One to look out for!
08:38 PM GMT
Half-time: Preston 0 Arsenal 2
Preston have tried their best to weather the storm in the opening 45 minutes, but goals from Jesus and Nwaneri put the visitors firmly in charge.
Here’s Nwaneri’s 33rd-minute wonder-goal. Reminder: he’s just 17 years old...

GOAL!
Brighton 0 Liverpool 1 (Gakpo, 46)
A breakthrough at the Amex!
Liverpool start the second half on the front foot and are rewarded with the opening goal.
Well, that’s one way to liven things up. After a tedious first half, Cody Gakpo has immediately given Liverpool the lead at the start of the second with a belter. Taking the ball from Curtis Jones, he stepped into the Brighton area and bent a lovely shot beyond Jaston Steele.
08:34 PM GMT
Half-time: Newcastle 2 Chelsea 0
The hosts are firmly in front after 45 minutes.
Chelsea had their fair share of chance but simply were not able to find a way through Newcastle’s steadfast defence.
Maresca might soon be looking to a certain midfielder on his bench if this continues.
08:27 PM GMT
Chelsea looking for a way back in
Newcastle are weathering a period of high pressure from their visitors who are desperate to get a goal before half-time.
Felix has had his fair share of chances with his most recent one being pushed away by Pope.
08:21 PM GMT
GOAL!
Preston 0 Arsenal 2 (Nwaneri, 33)
Arsenal double their lead in spectacular fashion.
17-year-old Nwaneri, who continues to impress for the north London side, collects the ball in space from Sterling. He manages to bend a curling shot into the top left-hand corner of the net.
A great finish from the teenager.
That was special - Ethan Nwaneri with an absolute cracker in the 33rd minute, bent into the far corner with his left foot.
The teenage talent is making the EFL Cup his personal stage this season.
The travelling support proudly crow that he’s one of Arsenal’s own before quickly going back to denigrating Preston and expressing their desire to go home.
08:19 PM GMT
Half-time: Brighton 0 Liverpool 0
It’s all square after 45 minutes in the early kick-off at the Amex Stadium.
That was not what could be described as the most dramatic 45 minutes of the season. Rather it was half demonstrating the relative strengths of both teams’ squads, which appropriately enough, ended in stalemate. Liverpool, with Dominik Szobosclai as the most advanced player in the middle, with Curtis Jones just behind him and Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo on the flanks, have been, as they generally are under Arne Slot, smooth and controlled. They served up two reasonable chances, both Luis Diaz and Andy Robertson being thwarted by Jason Steele in the Brighton goal, both efforts at the end of slick passing moves.
Brighton, like Liverpool with their bench full of the first team cavalry ready to come on should the need arise, were dependent on Tariq Lamptey’s pace and Brajan Gruda’s dancing feet, neither of which could find a way through. Let’s hope things get a little more exciting in the second half.
08:12 PM GMT
GOAL!
Newcastle 2 Chelsea 0 (Disasi og, 26)
The hosts quickly double their lead!
Willock heads the ball home from close range and his effort deflects off Disasi and into the back of the net.
Newcastle have blitzed Chelsea here and the London side have conceded twice in quick succession. Newcastle’s first goal is the perfect breakthrough for a high pressing team. They have been putting pressure on Chelsea all evening as they try to play out from the back and Joelinton steals the ball from Veiga, Sandto Tonali slides in to divert the loose ball to Alexander Isak and he finishes clinically.
Moments later, Isak gets away down the left and his deflected cross is headed towards goal by Joe Willock before bundled across the line by Axel Disasi. Chelsea looked shellshocked.
08:11 PM GMT
GOAL!
Aston Villa 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Duran, 23)
It’s all happening at Villa Park!
Who else but Duran - he stretches to collect Bailey’s ball which is fired into the box and guides it home. The Palace goalkeeper gets his fingertips to it but just can’t keep it out.
It’s his eighth goal of the season.
Villa are level – and it’s cup specialist Jhon Duran who has struck again. This time the burly striker squeezes a deflected shot inside Matthew Turner’s left-hand post after Boubacar Kamara dispossesses Kamada and sends Leon Bailey galloping clear down the right with a fabulous chip. Bailey pulls it back to Duran, who gets there fractionally ahead of Emiliano Buendia just inside the box.
08:10 PM GMT
GOAL!
Newcastle 1 Chelsea 0 (Isak, 23)
Against the run of play, the hosts are in front.
Chelsea’s sloppiness at the back costs them dearly. Veiga loses possession to Joelinton who passes to Tonali. He hooks it forward to Isak who makes no mistake with his finish.
08:09 PM GMT
GOAL!
Preston 0 Arsenal 1 (Jesus, 24)
Arsenal finally have the breakthrough!
It’s Jesus’s first goal in 25 games.
Martinelli’s free kick from the far post fires into the box. Kiwior gets his head to it and sends it back to Jesus. He makes no mistake and slides the ball past Woodman and into the roof of the net.
Arsenal are on their way and there was an air of inevitability about the opening goal.
Gabriel Jesus hammered it home in the 24th minute, swivelling to dispatch a right-foot shot home from ten yards out after Jakub Kiwior had won a far-post header from Gabriel Martinelli’s free-kick.
Martinelli was the initial architect too, winning the free-kick with his run to the byline before being tripped by Kaine Kesler-Hayden who was booked for his troubles.
08:06 PM GMT
Goalscorer Eze forced off
Eze’s game is over – in the 18th minute. After treatment following a mystery knock, the Palace forward eventually trudges off, to be replaced by Daicha Kamada.
08:05 PM GMT
Liverpool pushing to break deadlock
Great play from Liverpool - they break the line, with Szoboszlai, Diaz and Gakpo combining down the middle
The ball goes out to Robertson who crosses to Szoboszlai but his first-time shot from inside the box is blocked by Steele. Diaz runs onto the rebound but his effort flies wide.
08:02 PM GMT
Preston weathering the storm
It could be a lonely evening for Sam Greenwood up front for Preston.
Greenwood, a one-time Arsenal youth team player, could do with a bit of company.
Caution from Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom might be prudent given the opposition but it would have been good to see North End give it a go.
The plan looks like it is to try to absorb what Arsenal throw at them before maybe hitting the Gunners with a set-piece. Or grinding them down in a marathon penalty shoot-out maybe.
07:59 PM GMT
Chelsea in charge
Despite changing their entire team for this League Cup clash, Chelsea are on the front foot at St James’ Park and look more likely to score at the moment.
A last-ditch block from Willock denies Veiga the opening goal.
07:55 PM GMT
GOAL!
Aston Villa 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Eze, 8)
Against the run of play, the visitors lead at Villa Park!
Munoz breaks quickly down the right and swings his cross into the box. Eze collects the ball and has some work to do but manages to guide his header into the bottom corner.
It’s his third goal in the League Cup this season.
Palace have stunned Villa Park into silence by taking a surprise lead in the eighth minute. Eberechi Eze is unmarked after cleverly pulling off his marker to send a classic downward into the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards to get on the end of Daniel Munoz’s deep, pacey cross.
The move started when Adam Wharton’s centre hit Tyrone Mings and bounced nicely for Munoz.
07:52 PM GMT
A tough challenge for Preston
There’s a lot of eyeballs on 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri who scored twice in the last round against Bolton for Arsenal.
The attacking midfielder looks a classy operator. A lovely ball early on released Jurrien Timber in the penalty area but nothing came of it.
Preston could have their hands full tonight…
07:50 PM GMT
Early chances at St James’ Park
Frustration for both Newcastle and Chelsea as they both have great chances in the early stages of the game.
Dewsbury-Hall goes for goal but his tame effort is dealt with by Pope. Newcastle then break, with Isak firing the ball into the path of Joelinton. His first-time effort strikes the post.
An exciting start at St James’ Park.
07:47 PM GMT

Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Manchester United host Leicester in the final 7:45pm kick-off - you can follow Telegraph Sport’s dedicated coverage of that fixture here.
07:44 PM GMT
End to end
Chances at both ends in the opening stages of this clash - all very open at the moment.
Lamptey is through on goal after a perfectly-timed pass from Adingra. He’s free on goal but Jaros darts out and makes the important save. The Brighton man should probably have done better there.
Liverpool respond quickly. Gakpo fires a shot at Steele however he bends his effort just wide of the far post.
Both sides knocking on the door.
Vitezslav Jaros, making his full debut for Liverpool, has just been required to make an excellent save from Tariq Lamptey, who had stolen into the box unnoticed.
07:39 PM GMT
Early pressure from Liverpool
The hosts are struggling in these very early stages with Liverpool starting on the front foot.
Brighton goalkeeper Steele is under a lot of pressure. He’s taking too long in front of goal and the Liverpool players are trying to capitalise on his indecision.
Szoboszlai has been close to dispossessing him in front of goal twice in quick succession as Brighton’s early attempts to play out from the back put them in very precarious situations
07:31 PM GMT
Kick-off!
Tonight’s early kick-off at the Amex Stadium, where Brighton host Liverpool, is underway.
Arne Slot’s side are looking to defend the trophy after beating Chelsea 1-0 in the final last season.
07:17 PM GMT
‘It’s up to us to put the spanner in the works’
After Stoke and Sheffield Wednesday both lost last night, Preston are now the only non-Premier League team left in the League Cup - and they are relishing the challenge.
Paul Heckingbottom, Preston’s manager, told Sky Sports ahead of their clash with Arsenal:
“They’ve shown over the last few years how good of a team they are. We know we are playing one of the top teams, it’s a great opportunity for our players to play against who I consider one of the best teams.
“Majority of our fans are coming for a good occasion to see Arsenal. Arsenal are coming to progress and it is up to us to put the spanner in the works.”

Tottenham vs Manchester City
Manchester City head to Tottenham tonight, with the hosts looking to bounce back after a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend.
They booked their place in the round of 16 after coming from behind to beat Coventry City 2-1. City earned their spot at this stage of the competition with a 2-1 home victory over Watford.
The hosts will be without their captain Heung-Min Son tonight, as confirmed by manager Ange Postecoglou, who said: “Sonny, no. Well he is almost fit but we will probably from our perspective aim him for the weekend. We’re quite confident he will be right for the weekend.”

Manchester United vs Leicester
Since the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday, Manchester United have dominated the spotlight with speculation around who will replace the Dutchman and questions on just how the club can return to its former glory.
Hoping to kick off the team’s new era in the best way tonight is Ruud van Nistelrooy, the interim manager tasked with ensuring United beat Leicester this evening and qualify for the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

Patched-up Arsenal mired in ‘unimaginable’ defensive crisis
In one of their biggest games of the season against Liverpool on Sunday, Arsenal finished the match with a back four that consisted of arguably their fourth-choice right-back, second-choice right centre-back, third-choice left centre-back and probably their fifth-choice left-back.
“The situation we are going through at the moment – probably you cannot imagine,” said manager Mikel Arteta.
Writing after the match, Sam Dean said it was quite an extraordinary set of circumstances, and it was perhaps no surprise that Arteta’s makeshift defence was unable to shut out Liverpool’s collection of elite forwards in the second half of the 2-2 draw in north London.
At the time of Mohamed Salah’s equalising goal, Arsenal’s back four was made up of Thomas Partey (a midfielder), Ben White (usually their right-back), Jakub Kiwior (their fringe option for emergencies) and Myles Lewis-Skelly (an 18-year-old).
Arteta has named a much-changed line-up tonight as he battles with injury issues and tries to rest key players, however he has still opted for a strong backline as Timber lines up alongside Saliba.
Find out more about the struggles facing Arteta in Sam’s piece here.

Newcastle aim to keep silverware dreams alive
It is too early to call this a must-win game for Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe but progress in a domestic cup competition will keep those trophy-winning dreams alive for a little while longer.
When you haven’t won anything since the black and white television days, these things matter and with their league form stuttering, a win tonight will give everyone a timely lift, while simultaneously calming things down.
Newcastle have picked a strong side, but you would not call it their strongest. However, switching things around - especially in midfield - might not do any harm as the balance has not looked right.
Anthony Gordon starts alongside Alexander Isak up front in what may well be a move away from Howe’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.
This is probably the fourth most important competition for Chelsea this season and they have made 11 changes to the side that beat Newcastle 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The strength of Chelsea’s squad though means there will be plenty of talent on the pitch.
07:00 PM GMT
Teenage goalkeeper makes debut for Arsenal
Tommy Setford’s butterflies ahead of his Arsenal debut will be eased by the reassuring presence of William Saliba at Preston.
The England Under-19s goalkeeper, who arrived from Ajax in the summer, starts for the first time at Deepdale with Saliba back in the defence after suspension for the Gunners.
While Mikel Arteta has stayed true to his promise to rotate, Setford has some strong protection in front of him with Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jurrien Timber making up the back four.
There is also a cavalry on the bench with Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz ready if required.
06:53 PM GMT
Newcastle out for revenge
Chelsea hosted Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday and won 2-1 thanks to the all-too familiar heroics of Cole Palmer.
As Luke Edwards wrote after the match, Chelsea are not a one-man team but they do boast the most devastatingly effective player in the Premier League in Cole Palmer.
This was another sumptuous, match-winning display from the England international, who created Chelsea’s first goal and scored their second. He didn’t win the Ballon d’Or when it was announced on Monday, but the fact he was shortlisted for it says everything about how he is performing.
He is one of those rare breeds. A player who defines games even when you think he is having a quiet one. Teams simply cannot find a way to stop him, and without him Chelsea would have dropped points at home to Newcastle.
The hosts will hope for revenge tonight as they look to beat Chelsea on home soil and progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup. In a boost for Newcastle, Palmer does not start tonight - something they will hope to capitalise on.
To get you in the mood, you can read Luke’s full report of the weekend match here.

Good evening and welcome to our coverage of tonight’s round of 16 League Cup matches.
Six games take place across the country tonight, with many of the Premier League’s top teams in action.
Liverpool travel to the south coast to take on Brighton where the cup’s defending champions will look to continue their strong start to the season under Arne Slot. Meanwhile, the hosts will hope to bounce back after a last-gasp comeback from Wolves saw them slump to a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
Chelsea hosted Newcastle in a Premier League clash on Sunday, with the hosts winning 2-1 thanks to the familiar heroics of Cole Palmer. The two sides meet again at St James’ Park tonight where Newcastle will be hungry for revenge on home soil.
After the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday, Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge in his first game as interim manager as Manchester United host Leicester City. Telegraph Sport’s dedicated coverage of that fixture will start shortly.
Meanwhile, Arsenal travel to Preston who are the only non-Premier League team in action tonight. They earned themselves a place in the round of 16 after beating Fulham in a memorable penalty shoot-out which ended 16-15. Mikel Arteta is likely to start a heavily-rotated side from their weekend draw against Liverpool as he tries to manage a number of injury concerns and players needing rest.
In the capital, Tottenham host Manchester City. The home side will be hoping to return to winning ways after suffering a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday. Pep Guardiola said he won’t risk any players he has doubts over with the team in the midst of an injury crisis, so we could see a much-changed starting line-up for the visitors. Telegraph Sport’s dedicated coverage of that fixture will begin shortly.
The final fixture sees Aston Villa host Crystal Palace with the visitors coming off the back of their first Premier League win of the season. Unai Emery’s men have made an impressive start to the season on all fronts as they currently sit top of the Champions League table and fourth in the Premier League. However after Palace’s weekend slaying of Tottenham, the visitors are not to be underestimated.
The round of 16 kicked off last night – with Southampton booking themselves a place in the quarter-finals with a 3-2 win over Stoke, and Brentford beating Sheffield Wednesday to also progress.
The quarter-final draw will take place after the conclusion of the final game tonight – which is likely to be Tottenham vs Manchester City as it has a later kick-off of 8:15pm.
We will have team news for you shortly.
