Huddersfield Town boss Michael Duff has confirmed that Lee Nicholls is “back in contention” following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Terriers’ stopper missed almost four months of the campaign with an elbow injury, with the 32-year-old last featuring for Town in the reverse fixture against Blackpool on September 24.

Nicholls is now able to make his return in tomorrow's clash against the Seasiders at Bloomfield Road, but Duff stressed that the goalkeeper has a battle on his hands to reclaim the number one jersey.

“Lee’s back training, full availability now,” the Terriers’ boss said. “He played in a game on Monday, so he’s back in contention and deemed fit. I’ve got 11 decisions to make (his team selection). If Chappy had come in for two or three games, it’s a different thing, but he’s had three, three and a half months, four months in the team now, and done well, so Lee’s going to have to fight for his place.

“It’s Chris Maxwell as well, I’d class them all as three first-team goalkeepers now. There aren’t many teams in this league that would be able to carry three goalkeepers like that. I think Lee knows that as well. I don’t think Lee’s under any expectations that he’s just going to say ‘well I’m fit, so give me my shirt now, it’s mine’, he knows he’s going to have to fight for his place, which is what you want.”

Duff added that Lasse Sorensen is on course to return against Bolton Wanderers next weekend, while Josh Koroma and Brodie Spencer are available for tomorrow afternoon’s encounter after having to come off against Wycombe Wanderers last time out.

“Lasse is in full training again, so again because of just the length of time that he’s been out, I’d imagine this weekend will probably be too soon, but he’ll be available for the Bolton game the weekend after, because he’ll have had two weeks full training then,” the head coach said.

“Josh and Brodie are fine, they would’ve both been alright for the last game that was called off as well (away to Shrewsbury Town).

“Kas (David Kasumu) will be a couple of weeks, I think Nigel Lonwijk’s about four weeks, but again we’ve had a bit of time now training on the grass. Antony Evans, Hoggy (Jonathan Hogg), Radinio (Balker) (are now back involved), so there’s proper competition for places now.”
