Leeds United are about to get the acid test of their January transfer window approach
Transfer activity is in short supply at Elland Road. Daniel Farke had warned everyone associated with Leeds United it would be a "quiet" January.
We are over a week into the window and, thus far, Farke has yet to bolster his first team squad. It seems more likely there will be outgoings, with Joe Gelhardt in talks over a possible loan move to Hull City.
Many Whites supporters would like to see some new arrivals. Some want a new goalkeeper to come in to challenge Illan Meslier for the No 1 spot. Others want them to land the elusive creative No 10 to give them more dynamism and penetration in the final third.

But Farke firmly believes in his current squad and is conscious of damaging the spirit within the camp by adding new players into the group. "Behind the scenes, our recruitment team and scouts are aware of available options for every position because if there is a significant injury setback or unforeseen circumstances, we must be prepared," Farke explained in late November.
"However, if all remains stable, I foresee a notably quiet January. Overindulging in transfers can inadvertently fracture a closely-knit group. At this moment, the squad is performing well and deserves recognition. We don't need an influx of new players—an increase in numbers might actually jeopardize our spirit and success. So, we remain alert but see no need for hasty decisions right now."
While a relatively calm January looks on the cards for United, their title rivals are making progress in their pursuit of new recruits. Burnley have captured Oliver Sonne and Ashley Barnes from Silkeborg and Norwich City respectively. Sheffield United are reportedly trying to wrap up deals for Southampton forward Ben Brereton Diaz and Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury. Sunderland are looking to strengthen three positions to increase their chances of going up.
Should the Whites be worried about the chasing pack bringing in reinforcements? Not in the slightest.
So what if their rivals are doing business? We are over halfway through the season and Leeds have been the best team in the Championship. Only three sides have beaten them in six months. They have shown remarkable levels of consistency and are the top-scorers in the division. There are no signs of them falling away. Burnley, Sheffield United and Sunderland would dearly love to trade places with Leeds. Their resources are the envy of the Championship.
Injured players are close to returning to further boost the options Farke has at his disposal. Centre-back Pascal Struijk and left-back Junior Firpo are thought to be progressing well from their knocks. You have also still got Ilia Gruev and Patrick Bamford to come back into the fold.
Are there some areas of the United squad where they still look a little thin on options? Of course. A dream window would be for them to strengthen the spine of the team: goalkeeper, centre-back, attacking midfielder and striker.
But the reality is that is not going to happen in this window. People should not lose sight of the fact their shrewd summer recruitment drive has left them in pretty good shape for the challenges that lie ahead. Injuries or suspensions could change things over the coming weeks, but Leeds remain firmly in the driving seat to seal a Premier League return.
