Leeds United have the chance to unearth next Crysencio Summerville to fix striker problem
The fact that only one Leeds United player has managed to reach double figures for goals this season is both a blessing and a point of concern.
The Whites have had 14 different scorers this term but only Joel Piroe has hit the milestone of 10. Borja Sainz of Norwich leads the Championship chart with 15 strikes, which is more than Piroe, Mateo Joseph, Patrick Bamford and the now-loaned Joe Gelhardt combined.
Fortunately for Leeds, Sainz will be suspended for when the Canaries swoop over to Elland Road on Wednesday after admitting to spitting at Sunderland’s Chris Mepham last month. Norwich are heavily reliant on their star attacker for goals, given he has netted 12 more goals than any teammate, which will concern Canaries fans.

United are in a much healthier position with Brenden Aaronson only three goals behind Piroe - but there are similar fears over attacking potency should the latter get injured for a period of time.
On Saturday, Leeds fans were shown the reality they face if he is sidelined. Joseph, though hard-working, lacked lethalness with his attacking play against bulky Harrogate Town defenders. His best effort of the game came when he struck the post from outside of the box.
The 21-year-old is not in a position to have pressure mounted on him at this stage in his development, which is backed up by the fact he has not scored since mid-October. Bamford is injured until the end of January but he has not started a league game all season and has played less than Joseph.
United’s other attacking players are, scoring-wise, doing fine but not great. Daniel James is the next highest scorer behind Aaronson with six goals in 20 league matches, albeit he has produced one more assist than his American colleague (three vs two).
Wilfried Gnonto has even more assists across all competitions having tallied five so far - the same amount as Manor Solomon - but both have only scored four goals each in a combined 45 Championship matches.
Largie Ramazani has been more prolific with three league goals and fewer than 600 Championship pitch minutes across 15 matches. Yet few would see him as a long-term starter just yet.
The goal burden in any given match cannot solely be on the singular striker, and wide players must do their part. While all have been commendable and exciting for the level, none of Gnonto, Solomon and James have yet shown to be truly ‘undroppable’.
Perhaps that points to the deep quality within the squad, but while the assists are there - and are a very important part of their game - it is goals that will really stamp their authority on Farke’s plans and United’s promotion push.
Who will be this season’s Crysencio Summerville? Which player can take the bull by the horns and help wrestle Leeds over that promotion line? Piroe cannot do it alone.
Summerville netted 19 Championship goals last season, which is the kind of gold dust quality that each current wide player has the capacity to reach when consistently on song.
That no winger has scored in consecutive league matches points to the consistency problem that they must arrest. The encouragement comes in the fact Leeds are top of the table despite not having a wide man matching the form of Summerville right now.
However, there is understandable nervousness among the fan base over how potent Leeds can be if Piroe is out of the side. How Norwich fare at Elland Road next week could come as visceral a warning. But with the club expected to have a quiet January then the solution to the angst might have to come from within - and the flanks.
