Leeds United have joined the race to sign Newcastle United defender Matt Targett, according to reports.

United have until February 3 to complete their transfer business, having yet to make their first signing of the January window.

Daniel Farke's side are top of the Championship table and two points clear of Sheffield United after being held to a goalless draw with fellow promotion rivals Burnley on Monday night.

It remains to be seen if Leeds will strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes. Based on the latest report it seems that left-back is an area that could see reinforcements added.

According to The Athletic, Leeds have approached Newcastle about the possibility of signing Targett. It has not been stated, though, if any potential deal would be a loan or on a permanent basis. Leeds currently have Junior Firpo and Sam Byram as their left-back options in their squad.

Targett has made just two appearances for Newcastle this season, including one in the Premier League against his former club Aston Villa.

After the draw with Burnley, Farke gave an honest response when asked about the possibility of Leeds making any new signings. The United boss hinted that some deals may be possible with his coy reply.

"I have not checked my phone for the last six hours," Farke said. "I will check it after this press conference, perhaps I can tell you more in the next press conference."

Leeds will return to Championship action this weekend as they host Cardiff City at Elland Road.

That will be United's final match before the transfer window closes, where it still remains uncertain if Farke will get any new additions to his squad for the promotion run-in.
