Leeds United favourite breaks ranks with Illan Meslier 'drop' claim as big call made
Former Leeds United star and fans favourite Stuart Dallas says it is the right move to remove Illan Meslier from the starting line-up and make the Frenchman earn his way back into the team. Meslier was replaced by Karl Darlow for yesterday's FA Cup victory over Harrogate Town, with the veteran keeper enjoying a solid game between the posts, albeit in a match were he was not tested to the levels usually expected in the Championship.
It's understood Leeds boss Daniel Farke had always planned to rest Meslier in this FA Cup game, so all eyes will be on his decision next weekend with the Whites hosting Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road in a Sunday lunchtime kick-off. Darlow will fancy his chances of retaining his place in the team with a rare Championship start and that's exactly the situation Dallas thinks should happen after Meslier's performance against Hull City in his last game.
Speaking on LUTV’s Matchday Live show ahead of the Harrogate game, Dallas said he would drop Meslier. “We’re talking about a goalkeeper that has played over 40/50 times in the Premier League. It’s not like it’s a young kid coming in," said Meslier.

"Karl Darlow is a good goalkeeper. If he is to bring him in, I’ve no doubts. Illan Meslier, he hasn’t been great. He possibly needs to be taken out of the team, in any other area of the pitch he would be taken out of the team and told to use it as motivation and come back stronger.”
Farke was critical of Meslier in the build-up to the FA Cup clash, highlighting he expects more from his goalkeeper. And yet, the Leeds boss also insisted it would be unusual to drop a goalkeeper when top of the table and the number one side in the league.
