Leeds United are reportedly set to miss out on the signing of Louie Barry, with Derby County working on a move to sign the striker.

The highly-rated Aston Villa youngster has been linked with a number of Championship clubs after returning to his parent club this month. He enjoyed a successful loan spell at League One side Stockport County.

Barry scored 16 goals in 24 appearances lighting up League One this season, playing mainly on the left-hand side of attack. Now, journalist Alan Nixon claims he could join Derby in another loan spell.

The Rams are said to be closing in on the 21-year-old's signature. Besides Leeds, Sunderland, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough are also believed to be interested in completing a swoop but now risk missing out.

Derby, who are currently 18th in the Championship, have had a difficult campaign so far - losing 13 of their 26 games. Having also struggled in front of goal, the former Barcelona forward would help improve their attack.

Villa plan to monitor Barry at a higher level and the Championship would be a new test for the talented frontman. Barry has had previous spells in League One and League Two with Ipswich Town, MK Dons, Swindon Town, Salford City and most recently Stockport.

Upon leaving Stockport, he said: "I've loved every second playing for County and going into training with an amazing group of lads. I will always hold Stockport County close to my heart. Thank you to the gaffa, the staff, all the players and most importantly the fans.

"I know I was only here on loan but you made me feel like I was one of your own which was a special feeling. Hopefully this isn't the last time we cross paths, but I will be a fan for life now. Thank you again."
