Leeds United notebook - Joel Piroe’s Illan Meslier admission and 'special' Guilavogui message
Illan Meslier has continued to receive plaudits as replays of his saves against Coventry City are shared around social media and chat forums.
The goalkeeper has made a number of errors that have ultimately cost Leeds United points in their bid for promotion this season, and as a result some onlookers called - in vain - for Daniel Farke to change his No.1.
The manager unsurprisingly stuck with him and in Wednesday’s match, Meslier repaid that trust. His low save from an Ellis Simms header in the second half was arguably his best this season while his tip onto the bar towards the end was also brilliant.

His teammates were just as impressed as those in the stands, Joel Piroe being one of them. Speaking to reporters after full-time, the opening goalscorer was asked whether Meslier has his confidence back, especially given that it is now five straight clean sheets for the Frenchman.
“Yeah definitely,” he replied. “Sometimes it is extra difficult for him, if he doesn't have to do much all game then suddenly you have to be there with a save. He did outstanding today and helped us.”
Guilavogui’s ‘special’ message
One of those clean sheets for Meslier came in last Saturday’s 7-0 drubbing of Cardiff City. Meslier did not have to make any game-saving stops in that match as the attackers took the limelight.
One of those to score was Wilfried Gnonto, who received extra loud cheers when he found the net shortly after coming on - and not just from the terraces. Teammates flocked around him to celebrate, including the ecstatic Josuha Guilavogui.
Farke has spoken about how the midfielder - who arrived on a free in October - has been one of his best signings at Leeds, so great has his impact been in the dressing room. Guilavogui did not get onto the pitch against Cardiff but sent a notable message on social media afterwards.
Taking to X (former Twitter), the former Atletico Madrid, Wolfsburg and France star said: “Our collective strength was not born today. It has been built over many months of hard work and dedication. I feel privileged to be part of this team.
“I have enough experience now to know that what we are experiencing is special. Let’s keep going,we will get the reward we deserve.”
Portsmouth game moved
Leeds United’s long away trip to Portsmouth has been moved forward by 21 hours and will now be held on Sunday, March 9 at midday. The change has come about after broadcasters Sky Sports and ITV selected the match to be screened live.
For many travelling United fans, it will mean either making their way down and staying over the night before or setting off early on Sunday morning to get to Fratton Park in time for kick-off. A number of supporters have voiced their vehement frustration at the change.
The moving of the fixture also means Leeds will play three games in the space of seven days, as opposed to the usual eight. After the trip to the south coast, Leeds host Millwall at Elland Road the following Wednesday before travelling to Queens Park Rangers the proceeding Saturday.
