Leeds United promotion rivals land former Tottenham winger who once played under Daniel Farke
Burnley, Leeds United’s Championship promotion rivals, have confirmed the signing of Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards on transfer deadline day.
Edwards joins the Clarets on loan for the rest of the season, with Scott Parker beating off intense interest from other clubs to land the player. Parker and Edwards worked together when the attacker was in Tottenham Hotspur’s academy.
He becomes Burnley’s fourth signing of the winter window, following Jonjo Shelvey, Ashley Barnes and Oliver Sonne through the door at Turf Moor. Edwards was once under the tutelage of Leeds boss Daniel Farke at Norwich City during the 2017/18 Championship season.

The attacker only played once under the German coach - coming on six minutes from time in a 2-0 defeat to Fulham in March 2018 - before his loan at Carrow Road expired that summer. Edwards would end his time at parent club Tottenham with just one senior appearance.
After a loan at Dutch club Excelsior, Edwards spent five-and-a-half years in Portugal, firstly with Vitoria Guimaraes and then with Sporting CP, where he registered 24 goals and 26 assists in 120 outings.
The 26-year-old, though, has only made 10 appearances this season, in part due to injury. He still managed to net three times in those outings.
After joining Burnley, Edwards said: “The main thing now is to get promoted back to the Premier League. I’m coming here to try and get myself into the team.”
On the manager, he added: “I know Scott from my time at Spurs. I know what he’s like. He’s ambitious, he’s driven. We had a good relationship back then so when I knew he wanted me to come that was enough for me.”
Meanwhile, Leeds are expected to have a quiet deadline day. Southampton are resisting interest in Cameron Archer, albeit United will remain attentive to the situation in case there is any deadline-day movement.
The table-toppers are one of few Championship clubs not to sign anyone this window.
