Charlie Crew looks set to join Joe Gelhardt in leaving Leeds United during the January transfer window. The midfielder is said to be attracting interest from League Two promotion hopefuls Doncaster Rovers.

A report in the Yorkshire Evening Post says Rovers are keen on signing Crew on loan for the rest of the season. The report adds that the Wales international could travel to South Yorkshire to undergo a medical ahead of completing a temporary move "in the next couple of days".

Grant McCann's side are seventh in the table, two points off the automatic promotion places. They booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round, beating Championship strugglers Hull City on penalties yesterday.

Speaking after the Tigers win, McCann said: "We're working on one more (deal) and I think we're quite close on it. Hopefully (it'll be done) by the early part of next week. Again, I feel this'll be a really good signing for us and hopefully we can get it over the line."

Crew, a graduate of United's youth system, is highly-regarded at Thorp Arch. He began training with the senior side last season and was taken to Germany for the first team pre-season training camp.

But Crew's opportunities to be involved at senior level have been limited due to the fierce competition for places in the midfield engine room. Boss Daniel Farke has an embarrassment of riches in the centre, including Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rothwell, Ao Tanaka, Ilia Gruev and Josuha Guilavogui. Farke handed Crew his debut in their routine league win over Plymouth Argyle earlier this season. The 18-year-old, who came off the bench for Wales in their friendly with Gibraltar in June last year, was not included in the matchday squad for Saturday's FA Cup win over Harrogate Town.

Leeds Live understands Gelhardt is closing in on a move to Hull, having slipped down in the pecking order for a starting berth at Elland Road.
