Leeds United have ruled out moving for Southampton striker Adam Armstrong, with teammate Cameron Archer also unlikely to leave the Saints for Elland Road as things stand.

Club sources have indicated that the chances of United acquiring a new signing before tonight’s deadline are very slim. Armstrong had, elsewhere, been linked with United earlier on Monday but insiders have now categorically dismissed making an approach.

And Southampton boss Ivan Juric had said last week that he did not expect Archer to leave St Mary’s this window, despite United holding an interest in the attacker. The Saints recently rebuffed an approach from Leeds and are holding firm on their stance.

It means United look set to end the winter window without bringing in a new signing for the third time in five years. The club will record a minus net spend too, having sanctioned the permanent exit of Sonny Perkins to loan club Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee.

Three short-term loan exits have also been confirmed, with Joe Gelhardt leaving for Hull City, Charlie Crew joining up with Doncaster Rovers and academy prospect Luca Thomas moving to Halifax Town. Fellow youth player Jeremiah Mullen may still yet seal a permanent switch to Dunfermline in Scotland with talks being held.

Meanwhile, there is not due to be any other departures from the senior squad. Everton loanee Jack Harrison has been linked with a switch to Fulham, but as of this afternoon the Cottagers had not made any contact with United.

Speculative reports linking United with Chelsea attacker Marc Guiu and Krasnodar forward Eduard Spertsyan have been dismissed by the club. A shock late exit from Wilfried Gnonto has also been ruled out.

The club have outlined they remained open to additions right up until deadline day but are insistent that they will only bring in a player this window if they will improve the team. While technically there is still time in the window for this to unfold, the chances of a new signing arriving at Elland Road look low.

Farke has stressed that he will not add players to his squad for the sake of it amid the risk that it could upset the strong team spirit within the dressing room. He has repeatedly underlined his faith and trust in his current cohort.

The manager has said he is open to additions at centre-back, number 10 and striker - but only if a potential arrival was affordable, of good quality and of sound character. The club are aware that this narrows down potential market options.
