Leeds United's Joel Piroe in great company with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as transfer point made
Joel Piroe scored his third goal in two matches for Leeds United during their 2-0 win over Coventry City on Wednesday. The Dutchman, who struck a brace against Cardiff City on the weekend, opened the scoring for Daniel Farke's side at the CBS Arena, firing a low left-footed effort into the bottom corner.
It was a trademark finish from Piroe, who is Leeds' top scorer this season with 13 goals in 31 Championship games. In fact, there is only one player that has netted more than him in the entire division, with Borja Sainz on 15. The next best is Josh Maja (12), while Emmanuel Latte Lath (11) and Callum Robinson (11) wrap up the top five.
Piroe hasn't just been banging in the goals this season, however. He has been doing it ever since he stepped foot in English football three-and-a-half years ago when he swapped PSV Eindhoven for Swansea City. Piroe joined the Swans for £1million plus add-ons and scored on his debut against Reading in August 2021.

His first season in the Championship was a success. Piroe set the division alight, scoring a whopping 22 goals in 45 second-tier appearances. But Piroe still finished 21 behind the Golden Boot winner, with Aleksandar Mitrovic netting a record-breaking 43 in that Fulham team that eased to the title.
Some felt that Piroe might drop off in his second season in the Championship, but that didn't happen. He fired a further 19 in 43 matches for Swansea during the 2022/23 campaign - nine behind Golden Boot winner Chuba Akpom, who earned a move to Ajax after impressing at Middlesbrough.
Like Akpom, Piroe decided to enter a new chapter of his career. Having been linked with a move to Southampton, Leicester and Sheffield United among others, the former Sparta Rotterdam forward instead decided to join Leeds in a deal worth £10m in August 2023 following their relegation to the Championship.
While last season wasn't Piroe's most successful, he still managed to end the campaign with 13 in 42. That wasn't enough to help fire the Whites to the Premier League, however, as they lost in the play-off final. It didn't help that Piroe was in and out of the Leeds XI that season, either, with Patrick Bamford often preferred.
With Bamford struggling for fitness and Georginio Rutter sold to Brighton in the summer, Piroe has seemed to make the No.9 role his own in the 2024/25 season. He has been in excellent form for Leeds and is going to be bidding to continue that for the remainder of the campaign as they bid to win promotion.
In total, Piroe has now scored 68 league goals since his move to England. And it is the third highest out of anyone in the Premier League or Championship during that time. Erling Haaland (82) and Mohamed Salah (81) are the only two players who have scored more than him in the top two tiers since the start of the 2021/22 season. Dominic Solanke (61), Aleksandar Mitrovic (59) and Heung-min Son (56) make up the top six on that list.
Although Piroe's form can be hit-and-miss at times, this statistic just shows how consistent he has truly been over the past three-and-a-half years. He is someone that Leeds are fortunate to have right now.
