Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is facing a suspension for this weekend’s relegation showdown with Leicester City after he was charged with misconduct by the FA.

In a scuffle that followed Wolves’ 2-1 defeat to Ipswich last Saturday, Cunha was seen pushing his elbow into the head of a member of the Tractor Boys’ security team, then putting his hand in his face and ripping his glasses off, allegedly breaking them. The FA have seen fit to charge the 25-year-old with misconduct, giving him until Thursday to reply.

In a statement, the FA said: “Matheus Cunha has been charged with misconduct following the Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday, 14 December. The forward allegedly acted in an improper manner after the final whistle. He has until Thursday, 19 December, to provide a response.”

If the charge is upheld, Cunha will likely receive a ban for this Sunday’s game, which would be a boost to City in their bid to win the six-pointer. Cunha is Wolves’ leading scorer this season, netting eight times and providing three assists in 16 outings.

Wolves, who are set to appoint Vitor Pereira before the game, also have star left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri missing. The Algerian international was also involved in the post-match melee and received a second yellow card that earns him a suspension for this weekend’s game.

Failure to win could see City fall into the bottom three for the first time this season. If Ipswich beat Newcastle, only a win over Wolves will be enough to ensure they don’t go into Christmas in the relegation zone.
