Leicester City prospect Will Alves celebrated a milestone at the weekend with the 19-year-old making his first-ever senior start.

After two matches as a substitute, Alves was brought into the 11 for loan club Cardiff City’s Severnside Derby with Bristol City, the Bluebirds earning a 1-1 draw with a late equaliser through Yousef Salech.

And Alves will be a strong contender to start again after he was picked out by WalesOnline as Cardiff’s star man.

Playing the full 90 minutes, first on the left wing and then on the right, Alves set up three chances, the joint-most in the game, and completed seven progressive carries, including three into the penalty area.

WalesOnline wrote of Alves’ performance: “A lively presence in the final third throughout. Was at the heart of what was an improved second-half performance.”

Speaking ahead of the game, Cardiff boss Omer Riza, who worked with Alves in England’s youth set-up, had praised the teenager, saying: “Young Will Alves has looked very lively, very bright. He causes problems.”

Reacting to full senior debut, having only ever been a substitute for City, Alves wrote on social media: “A hard fought point and a proud moment to have made my first start for the club at home.”

The draw against Bristol City leaves Cardiff three points above the Championship drop zone with 14 matches to play, and with two big fixtures coming up against 23rd-placed Plymouth and 21st-placed Hull.

Then Alves may get to take on Premier League opposition with Cardiff travelling to Aston Villa to compete for a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
