Reading boss Noel Hunt has confirmed that talks are 'ongoing' between the club and Wolverhampton Wanderers over the possibility of bringing Chem Campbell back to the club.

The 21-year-old scored five goals for the club between August and December, originally signing on a short-term loan from Wolves.

Injury ruled him out of a farewell match at Charlton Athletic, which was drawn 0-0 two days before his loan officially expired, but the club are working hard to bring him back until the end of the season.

Still needing EFL approval due to the club's current transfer embargo, the three parties are still working on a deal while the Wales youngster receives treatment for an injury suffered in New Year's Day's 3-1 win over Cambridge United.

With the transfer window open until February 3, no deal is needed to be completed imminently, although Hunt would obviously want the youngster back in Berkshire and involved as soon as possible, if at all possible.

"He is getting treatment," Hunt confirmed on Thursday. "The clubs are still talking so let’s see how that progresses over the week. I know we are working hard behind the scenes and hopefully, fingers crossed, we get good news later on."

Supporters are fearing the worst when it comes to more exits, with five first-team players sold last January to fund the club over the short-term.

It has been nine days since the window opened, but so far nobody has departed and Hunt said, "Nothing has come at all, which is good news for us. There will be conversations, no doubt, but for me and Brian [Carey] there has been nothing that we can report home about."

Reading remain under embargo due to not publishing financial accounts for the 2022/23 season, which were due last year.
