AC Milan are said to be ramping up their bid to sign Lewis Ferguson and hope that ongoing transfer business with Bologna can clear a path to make a move for the Scotland midfielder next summer.

Former Hamilton and Aberdeen star Ferguson is set to miss the next couple of matches after picking up another injury in the Champions League clash with Sporting CP earlier this week. The Bologna captain's superb displays in Italy since his arrival from Pittodrie in the summer of 2022 have caught the eye of several big sides in Serie A, including Milan's bitter city rivals Inter.

But according to Calciomercato (via Milanlive.net), seven-time Champions League winners' Milan are very keen to make a move for Ferguson next summer, with club director and former Rossoneri favourite Zlatan Ibrahimovic a big admirer of the 25-year-old. Milan full back Davide Calabria is closing in on a move to Bologna ahead of Monday's transfer deadline, while the latter also want to turn midfielder Tomaso Pobega's loan spell into a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

Bologna will reportedly have to pay around €12million (£10million) for the Italian international, but Milan hope that a strong relationship between the two clubs will be mutually beneficial and can help negotiations in trying to bring Ferguson to San Siro in the summer. The report adds that Bologna currently value the Scotland ace at €30million (£25million), but that it could be lowered in the event that Ferguson is not able to make a recovery from his latest injury.

Ferguson only penned a new contract at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara back in November but could be tempted to move on at the end of the season if Bologna fail to secure European qualification after their fifth place finish last year. However, Vincenzo Italiano's side currently sit three points clear of Milan in sixth place, albeit having played a game more.

Aberdeen will be watching on with interest having included a 20 per cent sell on clause when they sold the midfielder to Bologna nearly three years ago. Ferguson has scored 14 goals in total for Bologna in 79 games and is the highest scoring Scot in Serie A history after eclipsing the late great Denis Law's record in 2023.
