Hull FC may be through to the fourth round of the Challenge Cup, but York Acorn, the proud National Conference League side, will always have their moment in the sun. Darting over, it was Jordan Myers who drew the amateurs level with their Super League counterparts with 20 minutes on the clock.

And while the end result saw John Cartwright's side win 52-6 in his first competitive game in charge, it takes nothing away from the heart and spirit shown by the North Yorkshire-based outfit. The magic of the cup, even if played at Featherstone's Millennium Stadium 30 miles away from the club's Thanet Road base, was here to see.

It was true David vs. Goliath stuff, and David certainly had a few swings. But this time Goliath won. For Hull, it was job done. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing spectacular, but job done.

Clunky they may have been in part, but they showed enough quality to post nine tries, and most importantly, they're into the hat ahead of next week's Super League opener at Catalans Dragons. Their pick of the bunch was energetic and pacey winger Lewis Martin, scorer of the first try, setting the second up, adding two more to complete his hat-trick, and just generally running the ball like every carry was his last.

That energy and ability to get Hull on the front foot played a huge part and certainly gave Cartwright something to think about as far as team selections for the trip to Perpignan go, with the winger, through his own admission, not guaranteed a place in the side despite last year's stellar shows.

Handing out seven debuts, it was a youthful Hull side that took to the field in West Yorkshire, with John Asiata making his competitive bow. The loose-forward was joined by Cade Cust, Oliver Holmes, and Hugo Salabio. Elsewhere, three Rising Talent Group players got their shot, with Lloyd Kemp joined by Joe Ward and Will Hutchinson.

As expected, Hull dominated the early field position, albeit they were helped by Acorn's high tackles. After eight or so minutes, the amateurs cracked, with Martin staying strong to ground the ball after Ryan Westerman's slick catch and pass.

However, Hull failed to add to that first score, and Acorn hit back. In their first foray into Hull's half, they mounted some pressure and got their reward as Myers collected the kick to score.

To their credit, Acorn held their own for large parts of the cup tie, but Hull soon went up another gear, with Martin's offload finding a runaway Cust to score under the posts. Hull then added two more tries before the break, with Asiata going under the sticks after a strong carry and Denive Balmforth picking up a loose ball to score.

That saw Hull 24-6 up at half-time, and they didn't take long to get the scoreboard moving in the second half. Martin got his second, finishing well in the corner, before rising talent Kemp, just 18 years old, darted over.

The game then got a little scrappy, with Hull guilty of errors, forcing the play instead of going through their system. A wake-up call was needed, and it came as Kemp and Balmforth combined with Westerman putting Martin over for his hat-trick try.

A lengthy effort from Harvey Barron then followed, and the stand-in centre then added his second, powering over to bring up the 50-point mark and, with that, get the Cartwright era at Hull FC up and running.
