Liam Kitching claims he was unaware of Blackburn Rovers’ January transfer interest in his services.

The Sky Blues centre-back was the subject of firm interest from Rovers’ boss and former City skipper John Eustace last month, with the Lancashire Telegraph reporting that the club put the feelers out and made contact with Coventry over a potential loan move.

The 25-year-old defender had been out of Frank Lampard’s team in the build-up to the mid-term window but was given his chance against Norwich early last month and has stayed in the starting line-up ever since as the 2023 summer signing from Barnsley has regained his form.

Asked about the interest at the time last month, Lampard made his stance clear on both Kitching and striker Brandon Thomas-Asante, who was also reported to have been a target for Blackburn who, by coincidence, signed Sky Blues legend Kyle McFadzean in the previous January window.

Although Kitching only played with fellow centre-half McFadzean for half a season at the CBS Arena, the pair struck up a strong bond on and off the pitch which continues to this day. McFadzean was one of a number of former City players, along with Liam Kelly, Gus Hamer and Sam McCallum who were at last week’s match against Leeds United.

Asked about the interest in his services in the recent window, and asked jokingly whether McFadzean was acting as his agent, Kitching chuckled and said: “I’m not sure about that but I speak to Fadz every day. He’s a really, really close mate of mine and I try to take bits from his game.”

As for the link with Rovers, he insisted: “I wasn’t aware of the interest. All I was trying to do was get my head down, train well and get myself back in the team.”

McFadzean, meanwhile, left Ewood Park three weeks into the January window to join League Two Chesterfield, only to suffer a knee injury two games into his spell with the Spireites, resulting in the 37-year-old defender being out for a 'significant' period.
