Linnets struggle in A47 derby at Peterborough
Peterborough Sports 3 King’s Lynn Town 1
King’s Lynn Town came off second best in their derby clash with Peterborough Sports.
For the fourth time as Lynn boss, Adam Lakeland failed to see off a Sports side marshalled on and off the pitch by former Linnets favourite Michael Gash.
Sports were good value for their win, albeit against a Linnets side missing two defenders and two strikers to injury.
Lynn keeper Paul Jones saved an early penalty before Eliot Putnam put Sports ahead on the half-hour mark. Kian Ronan levelled soon after the break, but parity lasted just 10 minutes , with ex-Linnet Michael Gyasi scoring from the penalty spot before Max Booth made it 3-1.
Lakeland named new loan signing from AFC Rochdale, Finlay Armstrong, in his starting line-up, with defenders Kyle McFadden and Freddie Sass sidelined along with Jonny Margetts and Gold Omotayo.
Tommy Hughes had the first sighter of goal, on five minutes, but it was an easy catch for keeper Peter Crook.
Dan Jarvis replied moments later at the other end, but put a low shot wide of Jones’ left post.
Jones was the hero on 11 minutes when Sports were awarded a penalty after Josh Coulson fouled Booth. Hugh Alban-Jones stepped up but Jones dived full length and tipped the ball on to his post.
Moments later new boy Armstrong forced keeper Crook into a save and from the ensuing corner ex-Linnet Ryan Fryatt appeared to push Coulson, but the whistle remained unblown.
Sports went ahead on the half-hour mark when Booth played the ball in from the left and Eliot Putnam turned and volleyed home from 10 yards.
It was a good spell for the hosts, with Booth testing Jones’s reflexes with a stooping header.
Within two minutes of the second half, Lynn were level – Josh Hmami’s ball in from the left swept home by Ronan.
Then on 56 minutes, Lynn conceded another penalty when Gyasi was brought down as he headed into the area. Gyasi stepped up and converted.
It sparked Lynn into their most intense pressure of the game – Greg Taylor volleyed wide and there were loud calls of handball from Lynn players and their fans behind the goal.
But then came a piece of brilliance from the hosts to put the game out of Lynn’s reach – Kaine Felix made ground down the right, leaving Taylor in his wake, crossed into the area where Gyasi laid it off for Booth to smash home.
It could have been worse had Jones not denied Jarvis with a superb save.
