Lionel Messi: His best performances against English sides
Lionel Messi once again has an English team in his crosshairs as Barcelona take on Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final.
The Argentinian superstar has scored an incredible 24 times in 32 games against English representatives in the Champions League and will look to continue that record against Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Having actually failed to score against the Reds in his only two matches against them in 2007, the forward now has two opportunities to rectify that as well as add to his extensive list of star performances against England’s best.
Manchester United
Messi has scored four goals in six games against United but it was his first set that set the tone for what was to follow.
Ahead of the 2009 Champions League final, the debate over who the better player was between he and Cristiano Ronaldo was in its genesis.
With two on opposite sides in the biggest game of the season, it was Messi who would come out on top after scoring an unlikely header against the formidable centre back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, sealing a 2-0 win for the Catalan club.
Arsenal
With an astonishing nine goals in six matches, it’s safe to say that the Gunners are probably Messi’s favoured English victims.
A dramatic 2-2 draw in London meant Barca were clear favourites at home in the return match, but Nicklas Bendtner of all people didn’t read the script as he put Arsenal in front on the night.
The only served to motivate Messi as he produced an incredible four-goal masterclass to ease his side into the semi-final.

Chelsea
Having failed to score in his first eight meetings against the Blues, Messi had something of a score to settle in 2018’s round of 16 clash.
Not content with breaking his duck with the only goal at Stamford Bridge, Messi took just two minutes of the return match to inflict more pain on the West Londoners with a fierce strike between the legs of Thibaut Courtois to make the tie safe.
He repeated the trick for good measure in the second half, again firing through the legs of the unfortunate Chelsea keeper to wrap up a 4-0 aggregate victory.
Manchester City
Pep Guardiola is often credited with helping ‘unleash’ Messi during their fruitful time together at the Camp Nou.
However, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was in no mood for a happy reunion when Guardiola’s City came to town in 2016.
In typically inspired form, Messi helped himself to a hat-trick in a comprehensive 4-0 victory leaving his former boss shell-shocked.
The treble contributed to his six goals in six games against the Citizens.
Tottenham
Messi faced Spurs for the first time earlier this season and wasted little time in adding the Lillywhites to his hit list.
At Tottenham’s temporary Wembley home, Messi helped himself to two clinical second half finishes as Barcelona sealed a 4-2 win.
Mauricio Pochettino’s might have suffered more Messi misery and could count themselves lucky as the forward also struck the post twice on the night in a typically spectacular display.
