Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has admitted that confidence within the Red Devils' camp is "low" ahead of the trip to face Liverpool at Anfield.

Ruben Amorim's struggling side comes into the clash against its fiercest rivals having lost four games in succession following on from the Manchester Derby. This torrid run of results means that the Old Trafford giants currently sit in a lowly 14th place in the Premier League table.

After sacking Erik Ten Hag earlier in the season, United's form has remained mixed as they face a major uphill battle for European qualification. By contrast, arch enemies Liverpool occupy the top spot in the standings after an impressive start to life under new boss Arne Slot in the first half of the campaign as the two teams prepare to meet on Merseyside.

Now, center-back Martinez has confessed that the mood in the United dressing room has plummeted in recent times following a series of poor showings in recent weeks. Speaking ahead of the clash with Liverpool, he acknowledged: I think the first games, we played really well and then our confidence, when you start losing is low.

"It's normal. But we are working on details, for sure. When you lose, you see everything [that is] wrong," the Argentinian ace continued, as he affirmed his trust in Amorim and his coaching staff. "I really trust in the manager, staff and team and today we have to take a step forward and we have to show why we are here."

The 26-year-old, who is referred to by fans as "The Butcher", is preparing to face off against in-form Mohamed Salah who has notched a staggering 17 times in 19 league outings so far this term. The Egyptian is arguably the most feared forward in the division currently after helping to install the Reds as frontrunners for the title.

Collectively, the Merseysiders have scored more goals than any team in England's top flight so far this season with 45 strikes. In addition, Slot's high-flying outfit have also conceded the least goals in the Premier League over the course of their 18 games played.

Despite United's clear struggles so far this season, the Dutchman believes that the visitors will prove a stern opponent at Anfield on Jan. 5. Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Feyenoord boss asserted: "I think every game we play is a serious test.

"United has much more than some other teams, so we know, not only because of the rivalry but also the quality players, it is a challenging game. Until now [we] haven't shown [complacency], but it might lead to the United players showing they are better than this. They had it with City away and last season with the FA Cup final. When you least expect it, they show up."
