Liverpool announces first transfer of January window as star lauded by Jurgen Klopp gets move
Liverpool center-back Rhys Williams has extended his loan stay with Morecambe until the end of the season.
Williams, 23, joined the League Two club on a loan deal until January back in August, and the success of the move so far has prompted all parties to agree to extend the deal until the summer.
Williams has made 25 appearances for The Shrimps, who are currently second from bottom in League Two and will hope the extension of the youngster's deal will help to keep them in the Football League.

“I’m delighted to be staying for the rest of the season,” Williams told Morecambe's in-house media team. “The fans, staff and all the players have made me feel so welcome and I couldn’t have enjoyed my time more. Let’s kick on and have a good 2025."

Meanwhile, Morecambe manager Derek Adams said: “It’s great for him because I think he’s gone from strength to strength since being here. He enjoys the club, he enjoys working with the staff, the players, and I think that’s very important.
“Quite easily, he could’ve moved on but that could’ve stopped his growth pattern, and I think staying here, playing week in, week out, will benefit him in the long run.”
The center-back made all 19 of his senior appearances for Liverpool during the 2020-21 season, when Jurgen Klopp was contending with a defensive selection crisis after Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all suffered season-ending injuries.
Klopp praised Williams on a number of occasions after promoting him to Liverpool's first-team squad in 2020, and also sent a message of gratitude to the center-back after Liverpool reached the Champions League final in 2022.
Williams played a key role in Liverpool qualifying for the 2021-22 Champions League as he started in each of Liverpool's final five Premier League games during the previous season, with the Reds winning all of them to secure a top-four finish.
"I messaged Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips," Klopp said. "We wouldn't be there without them. I remember the final game of last season and they left the pitch with a bandage around the head, cuts on their faces, and that was really a symbol for the whole period."
