Arne Slot is hoping Liverpool have a highly successful 2025 as they compete at the top of the Premier League, Champions League, as well as the defence of their League Cup - as they face Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final. With a seven-point cushion at the summit of English football, the Reds are favourites to win just their second-ever title since 1990.

The January transfer window poses the final opportunity for football managers to bolster their squads ahead of the relentless run to the finish line. Whether Slot and the executives at Anfield will look to strengthen in the upcoming market remains to be seen, having only signed Federico Chiesa during the summer and Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will officially complete his move to Merseyside in the summer.

Martin Zubimendi was the name on everyone's lips during the summer after the Real Sociedad midfielder turned down a move to Anfield, in order to stay in La Liga. The main story surrounding L4 is the contract uncertainty that Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah currently face with the prospect of losing the trio to the free agency market at the end of the season, looming large.

The Dutchman claimed after Sunday's 5-0 win over West Ham United that he wasn't thinking about the upcoming opportunity in January.

"There’s nothing in the media yet about who we’re going to bring in? No? And also not in my mind," he said. "I’m very happy with the squad we have, I said this six months ago and everybody was like ‘is this guy crazy?’

"But I think the players show the confidence the club and me had in them was all deserved. If you look at Jarell Quansah he hadn’t played a lot until now, a few appearances.

"The way he played to day shows how important it is that we keep working with these players, because we’re going to need all of them at a certain moment."

Number 6

Previously worn by Thiago Alcantara, the number six jersey for Liverpool has remained vacant since the Spaniard's contract expired in the summer.

It has been a number which midfield additions could move to, but in the years gone by, it has been predominantly occupied by defenders. The modern emphasis on the number being worn by a player in midfield, or just in front of the back four.

Following his astronomic rise so far this season, Ryan Gravenberch may be forced to move away from the number he wore at Ajax. Martin Zubimendi is a name that continues to be mentioned over a move to Liverpool but if the Dutchman's performances are anything to go by, he needs more of a deputy than a direct replacement.

Possible candidates: Ryan Gravenberch, Martin Zubimendi.

Number 12

Joe Gomez was the last player to occupy the number 12 shirt, one he owned for seven years until 2022. There have been some Liverpool greats who have been in possession of it down the years including Sami Hyypia, Robbie Fowler, Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush, to name a few.

Antonee Robinson and Milos Kerkez are two full-back candidates that have been liked with providing competition for Andy Robertson, following reports in recent weeks. They, too, could fall into the bracket to pick up the number 12.

There have been some goalkeepers to wear the shirt too, namely Jerzy Dudek, so it may be left for Mamardashvili.

Possible candidates: Antonee Robinson, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Number 13

Adrian established himself as Liverpool's third-choice goalkeeper towards the end of his career on Merseyside and firmly occupied the 13 shirt number.

Superstitions within football may limit those taking on the squad number, one which is unlucky for some. But in years gone by, Adrian, Alisson, Alexander Manninger and Scott Carson are all players to have been assigned the squad shirt in previous years.

Possible candidates: Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Number 15

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the last player to occupy the shirt number during his time on Merseyside. The former Arsenal midfielder enjoyed a bright start to his Liverpool career but it soon became ravaged by injuries.

Strikers such as Daniel Sturridge and Peter Crouch are goal-getters to have occupied the number in the past and in recent months, Alexander Isak has emerged as a player that Liverpool admire and could succeed Mohamed Salah - if reports to be believed.

The Telegraph slapped a £150million price-tag on the Sweden international. The former Real Sociedad striker has been firing them in for the Magpies, earning transfer speculation over a move to the likes of the Reds, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Spanish giants; Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Possible candidates: Alexander Isak.

Number 23

Luis Diaz has left this squad number vacant since he was assigned the famous number seven shirt. Cody Gakpo has since joined to strengthen the Reds' options in wide areas but it hasn't stopped speculation over moves for the likes of Anthony Gordon, Khivcha Kvaratskhelia and Omar Marmoush.

Marmoush in particular has been tipped to be the 'next Mo Salah' due to sharing an international dressing room with the Liverpool hero, as well as facing contract uncertainty at Anfield. The Eintracht Frankfurt star has shone in the Bundesliga as they challenge for Champions League qualification, with the 25-year-old scoring 13 goals in 15 appearances, adding eight assists.

In Napoli, Kvaratskhelia's future continues to be up for speculation with rumours swirling over an exit. Liverpool are never far away from talk over a possible move, though reports have never materialised into concrete interest.

He could be an option to bolster the wide areas and add a fresh injection of youth while Salah enters the twilight of his career. Although, should there be an opportunity join Liverpool, his favoured 77 is also available.

Possible candidates: Omar Marmoush, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Anthony Gordon.

Other notable vacant squad numbers: 16, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33.
