Liverpool ball boy vs Barcelona could secure transfer exit after surprise trial opportunity
Liverpool could be set to lose another of its academy stars before the end of the January transfer window, with Oakley Cannonier potentially set for a move to the Championship.
Although the Reds have made no new signings during the current window, they have offloaded some of their younger players. Marcelo Pitaluga and Tom Hill secured permanent switches to Fluminense and Harrogate respectively, while Calvin Ramsay has made the move on loan to Kilmarnock, having spent the first half of the season at Wigan Athletic.
Cannonier now looks as though he could follow his teammates out of the exit door. According to The Athletic, the academy striker is spending this week on trial with Leeds United, and played in their U21s’ 2-1 defeat to West Ham in the Premier League 2 on Monday.

The 20-year-old already has links to Leeds, having been born in the Yorkshire city and played for the club at youth level before joining Liverpool in 2015.
Since making the move to Merseyside, Cannonier has proven himself to be a prolific goalscorer at youth level, although his development has been impacted by injuries in recent years.
Although he hasn’t made a first-team appearance for Liverpool, Cannonier has nevertheless written himself into the club’s history books, having played a pivotal role in one of the Reds’ most famous European nights at Anfield.
The youngster was a ball boy for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona in 2019, and it was his quick-thinking that set Trent Alexander-Arnold up for his quickly-taken corner that would ultimately send Liverpool through to the final in Madrid, and on to their sixth European crown.
With the Reds’ having won a corner, Cannonier quickly threw the ball to Alexander-Arnold, who set it down before starting to walk away as Barcelona’s defenders tried to settle themselves, having been left shellshocked by the Reds’ comeback after losing 3-0 at the Camp Nou.
Alexander-Arnold though turned back to quickly whip the ball into Divock Origi, who swept it home to send Liverpool into the lead, and send Anfield wild.
Although Cannonier might not have been known to the majority of Liverpool fans at the time, they have become more familiar with him as he’s worked his way through the ranks at the club, with his role in that famous night emerging in recent years.
Should he secure a move back to Leeds, Cannonier would be joining the club in the midst of their charge to return to the Premier League. Daniel Farke’s side currently sits top of the Championship table after 29 games, leading Sheffield United by two points, while Burnley and Sunderland lie just three and five points off the pace.
