Liverpool bound goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili suffers injury blow as official statement released
Giorgi Mamardashvili is set for a spell on the sidelines after the goalkeeper suffered a thigh injury while playing for Valencia. The Georgia international will join Liverpool at the end of the season, after the Reds agreed a £29m deal for his signature last summer.
The 24-year-old has been an ever-present for the Spanish outfit in La Liga this season, but suffered the setback in Valencia’s 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano last weekend. He would complete the full 90 minutes but was required to undergo treatment on the pitch.
Now after undergoing medical tests, Valencia have now confirmed Mamardashvili’s injury though they have not put a timeframe on his return.

An official club statement on Tuesday read: “Giorgi Mamardashvili has been diagnosed with an injury to the rectus femoris of his right leg, sustained in the match against Rayo Vallecano at Mestalla.
“The club's medical services have decided that the goalkeeper will continue with medical treatment and physiotherapy at the Ciudad Deportiva.”
Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Mamardashvili after he shone for Georgia at Euro 2024. He has remained a standout player for Valencia so far this season, despite the club’s plight at the wrong end of the La Liga table.
Valencia currently sit 19th and have won just two of their 14 league matches to date. They boast games in hand on every other team in the division though.
Mamardashvili has kept three clean sheets so far this season and his absence will be an unwanted blow for Valencia as they look to reverse their struggles on the pitch.
Elsewhere, Liverpool have recently welcomed Alisson Becker back from a lengthy lay-off with a hamstring injury.
The Brazilian has endured an injury-plagued 12 months for the Reds, and has been sidelined since the start of October. However, the Liverpool number one is now back in full training and was included in their travelling squad for their Champions League clash with Girona on Tuesday evening.
Caoimhin Kelleher has shone in the absence of Alisson, despite previously admitting he wanted to leave the club last summer in search of starting football. It remains to be seen how Liverpool will resolve their goalkeeping set-up when Mamardashvili officially joins the club next summer.
