Liverpool could be left without three players for the Reds’ trip to Brentford on Saturday as Arne Slot faces a potential attacking re-shuffle. Darwin Nunez is available again after serving a one-match ban, but Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz were both absent from team training on Thursday.

The Portuguese suffered a ‘little niggle’ after scoring off the bench in Tuesday’s draw with Nottingham Forest, with Slot confirming he was a doubt for the weekend as a result.

“He wasn't on the training ground yesterday so that means we have to see today where he is,” he said in Friday’s pre-match press conference. “It's not sure that he will be available for tomorrow, we have to wait and see today.

“He felt a little niggle for the half-hour he came in. He could finish the game but afterwards he complained a bit about it.

“That's why he didn't train yesterday. We have to wait and see if he's available and then of course tomorrow.”

Slot was more hopeful that Diaz could be involved though, having missed training with a sore throat. However, he admitted Liverpool still have to wait and see if the Colombian is indeed declared available.

"I assume he is (available), yeah,” Slot said. “Yesterday he wasn't out because he had a bit of a sore throat. But I assume he will be training with us today. I still have to hear this but I am expecting him to train with us today."

Jota had been tipped to start against Brentford after his impressive showing against Forest, but his injury is set to hand an opportunity elsewhere. Given his chequered injury past, it would be a surprise to see Liverpool risk the forward from the start.

If Diaz overcomes illness, he could retain his starting place down the middle.

Alternatively, if he is instead limited to bench duty, Nunez could return to the starting XI following suspension, with Federico Chiesa and Jayden Danns the Reds’ other attacking options.

While the availability of the attacking clear remains uncertain, Joe Gomez will definitely miss the trip to Brentford. The defender suffered a hamstring injury against West Ham United last month and is yet to return to team training.

Ahead of facing Forest, Slot confirmed that the England international remains ‘quite far away’ from a return.
