Liverpool FC Women enjoyed the perfect start to 2025 last weekend when they beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 in St Helens. Olivia Smith opened the scoring for the Reds before former Everton star Nikita Parris equalised for the Seagulls.

But Grace Fisk struck the winner eight minutes before time to secure all three points for Matt Beard's side to move them up to seventh in the WSL table.

Liverpool travel to Leicester City on Sunday looking to build on a positive start to the year before a rearranged trip to West Ham United in the FA Cup on Wednesday evening.

Beard pleased with Liverpool turnaround

Matt Beard was delighted with his side's performance in the 2-1 win over Brighton and is hoping it can now prove to be a platform for Liverpool to build on in the second half of the season.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: "Yeah, it was important. We’ve had, as I’ve said before, a tough first half of the season. I think we deserved [to win] the game on merit tonight.

"A little bit of before in that we’ve had some really good chances where we could have finished the game off and we didn’t. Then we concede a frustrating goal. But I’m really proud of the girls.

"I said to them before the game, as much as it has been a rough first 10 games, they have never downed tools at all. They have always worked hard. They have always come in and wanted to improve.

"As much as the position that we’re in isn’t a good position, I’ve been proud of what we’ve put in. And I think we saw a little bit of the old, last-season Liverpool tonight. If you look at the changes we made from the bench, it helped us in the game massively. So, really, really proud of the performance."

Smith thinks 'reset' could be just what was needed

Goalscorer Olivia Smith believes the winter break could allow Liverpool to fight back in the second half of the season after she netted in the win over Brighton.

The Reds went into the break on the back of four defeats but Smith thinks that players returning from injury, as well as new recruits, could prove key in the second half of the campaign.

She said: "Definitely for the whole team. I think the first half [of the season] didn't go quite as we wanted and now we have a lot of players back in and new players as well. There's a lot of competition too, so I think that's really good for us."
