Liverpool has a double title advantage over Arsenal and 3 Arne Slot stars just proved it

In yet another positive move from Arne Slot, it was the Liverpool substitutes along with a couple of starters — who combined well to eventually break the deadlock against Brentford.

First, Darwin Nunez was called upon, then came Harvey Elliott, and finally Federico Chiesa. Each of them played their part; though Nunez, of course, will take most of the headlines, the others shouldn't be forgotten.

Elliott got the pre-assist for the opener and then laid on the second while Chiesa was buzzing around all over the pitch, racing to win the ball back and then making the right decision when he had it at his feet. The Italian was positive and decisive, and no doubt had his confidence boosted by his excellent goal last weekend in the FA Cup.

"I was [delighted by Elliott's performance when he came on]," Slot said during his post-match press conference. "All the other interviews, there was a lot of focus on Darwin because he scored two goals.

"Every time I said, 'Yeah, but don't forget Harvey he had a big impact on both goals as well.' It's so nice for me, for us as a team, that I have players that can impact the game on the bench as well. This happened at Forest with [Diogo] Jota and Kostas [Tsimikas] and today with Harvey and with Darwin."

Slot didn't mention Chiesa but that is likely because he wasn't directly asked about him. It is clear that both players played their part and each should be vying for a spot in the starting XI for Lille on Tuesday. With Liverpool essentially already through to the knockout phase without the need for the play-off round, there is no reason not to change things up.

It is for that reason that Liverpool holds a double Premier League title advantage over Arsenal, who dropped points from a winning position again this weekend, this time against Aston Villa. Mikel Arteta's side was two goals up before Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins gave Slot another boost.

In Europe, Arsenal has five fewer points than Liverpool. While the Gunners shouldn't be in danger of dropping out of the top eight spots, there is only a one-point buffer to ninth-placed Borussia Dortmund, so they still have work to do against Dinamo Zagreb and Girona.

While Arsenal won't have the luxury of making changes there despite its injuries mounting up, it doesn't have the substitutes depth that Liverpool has either. None of Nunez, Elliott or Chiesa is likely to break into the Reds' starting XI for the biggest matches any time soon, and then there are the likes of Curtis Jones and — when he is back from his latest setback — Diogo Jota.

Online, there might be plenty of chatter about transfers, and it is legitimate to suggest that Slot's roster could be further improved. The reality is, though, that Liverpool is in a stronger position than any other team in the Premier League. Most importantly, that is an area in which it holds a major advantage over its only realistic challenger, Arsenal.
